Four people were shot and killed Saturday night at a recreation center on East Amherst Street’s First Block, Buffalo detectives said, with one victim in critical condition.
Northeast District officials responded to the call at the District 1 complex just after 10:30 p.m. Two women and two men were taken to Erie County Medical Center, with one woman reported to be in critical condition on Sunday, police said.
One of the men, who was shot in the toe, was later arrested by Buffalo police and charged with illegal possession of a handgun.
In a statement released Sunday, Zone One’s management expressed sympathy for the victims’ families and said it was changing its hours and age requirements to open no later than 10 p.m. and that anyone under the age of 21 could only Enter with parents. The venue said it hired a licensed armed guard at the gate and the new software would scan IDs more efficiently.
Its website said the venue, mainly a roller skating rink, was “temporarily closed”.
“We are in shock at the Zone One Complex during the recent incident on Saturday 5th November 2022. Our hearts and prayers are with the families of the victims. We are deeply sorry for this type of violence and are currently working with Our police departments are cooperating to assist their investigations with any assistance we can,” the statement said. “The ‘Waiver Master’ software we have acquired will make it easier to scan ID cards than our previous software. We will still employ licensed armed guards at our gates during this time. Our focus is on home entertainment, non-profit, schools and Birthday party. We hope and always encourage a safe environment for our community. Once again, our hearts and prayers are with the family. Our deepest sympathies and support.”
The facility is located around commercial and residential properties, including the vacant Amherst Bowling Center and Planned Parenthood on Amherst Street. The Kids Zone childcare centre is located on Main Street. The Amherst Street subway station is nearby, as are some apartment buildings.
Many walkers and cyclists passed the recreation center on Sunday afternoon.
Nedra Hoskins, who lives nearby, said she heard what sounded like a fight Saturday. But for the most part, she didn’t hear or see any arguments or problems at the scene.
“At times, the crowd gets a little rowdy and rowdy,” she said.
Tyree Madison said she lives on the corner of a nearby apartment building but has never been on the grounds. She has never heard of any problems at the scene, including Saturday night’s incident.
“I was in bed at 10, so I didn’t hear anything,” Madison said.
