With the support of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, and in conjunction with the Ministry of Community Development for the 21st round of the national campaign, Clean UAE reached its fourth stop – the Emirate of Dubai. Building on the success of previous sites in Ajman, Fujairah and Sharjah, EEG, Dubai Municipality, Seh Salam Sanctuary Management, Dubai Economy and Tourism Mu opened 4 stations, covering a section of 10 square kilometers divided into 4 stations.
The launch of this year’s campaign coincides with the continuation of the International Volunteer Day and UAE National Day celebrations. It has witnessed tremendous participation from all segments of society, who came together to present a beautiful image of the UAE’s diverse society. In the early morning, 6,395 volunteers flocked to the Saih Al Salam area where the event was taking place.
The opening ceremony took place in the presence and active participation of HE Mariam Al Mheiri, UAE Cabinet Member and Minister of Climate Change and Environment, EEG Chairman, Vice-Chairman and Executive Committee Member. The event also saw the presence of several officials from government and private sector organisations.
HE Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, said in her speech: “Volunteering reflects our values in the UAE and has received impressive acceptance as an important social practice of giving back to the community. We will volunteer The work of researchers is seen as integral to our efforts to protect the environment and maintain its natural resources, as it raises public awareness of the importance of our fragile ecosystems and engages the wider community in protecting them, consistent with our goals Government. The Clean UAE campaign is a shining example of community engagement in a noble mission.”
The Minister noted that the UAE Cabinet has approved the “Clean UAE” campaign to foster a spirit of volunteerism in the UAE community. Launched on International Volunteer Day, the 10-day campaign aims to strengthen the role of federal government employees and the public in cleaning up tourist destinations across the country to coincide with the coolest winter events in the world and to support environmental efforts and readiness The 28th UN Climate Conference (COP28) will be held in the UAE in November 2023.
The Minister commended EEG for organizing the event and for its valuable contribution to environmental protection.
Subsequently, Ms. Habiba Al Mar’ashi, co-founder and chairman of the Emirates Environment Group, delivered a speech. Ms Habiba Al Mar’ashi said: “Emirates Environment Group originally launched this campaign in 2002 with the aim of instilling sustainable practices in different sectors of UAE society. This journey has been going on for years and the message has been consistent; protecting the environment is everyone’s responsibility.”
“The group has been at the forefront of driving strategies and activities that directly align with the UAE’s move towards ‘circularity’. The leadership’s aim to reduce landfill waste to zero by 2030 is a Ambitious goals, but we believe the progress achieved through this campaign is very much in line with achieving the stated goals and will help accelerate the UAE’s transition to net zero and a sustainable ecosystem” – added Mrs Al Mar’ashi.
Wearing athletic T-shirts and hats, equipped with reusable cotton gloves and biodegradable bags, participants cleaned an area of 10 square kilometers. A total of 11,300kg of waste was collected at the 4 sites; the EEG team and volunteers further segregated it, removed recyclables and handed over the remainder to the municipality for further processing and disposal. The segregated recyclable material is then uploaded onto EEG trucks and sent to recycling facilities in the UAE.
Mrs Al Mar’ashi expressed her deep gratitude to both ministers in her closing remarks Thank you for your sponsorship and strong support for this event. She thanked the supporters of the event – Dubai Municipality, the administration of the Seh Salam Reserve and Dubai Economy and Tourism.
