World News | Macron says France needs to address unrest over police killing of teens

[ad_1]

PARIS, July 6 (Xinhua) — President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday called for order and calm as he worked to address the root causes of days of unrest over the police killing of a 17-year-old boy across France.

A judge in Versailles on Thursday rejected a request for the police officer accused of shooting teenage Nahel Merzouq to be released pending further investigation after being detained on manslaughter charges.

“We have all lived through an important moment in the life of our country,” Macron said in the southern city of Pau, on the edge of the Pyrenees. France, he said, now needs “order, calm, unity. Then study the underlying causes of what happened.”

He did not say what those reasons were. The French leader blamed the parents of young thugs and social networks such as TikTok and Snapchat for fueling the violence that has spread to some 500 towns and cities.

Some activists, as well as residents of low-income neighborhoods where the violence took place, said the killing was the latest evidence of systemic police brutality and unaddressed racial discrimination in France. Merzouk is of North African descent. (Associated Press)
