Foreign Secretary James Cleverley said earlier on Thursday Sanctions imposed on Iran over alleged human rights violations Hostilities against its opponents on British soil would expand.

“Isabel Marsh, chargé d’affaires ad interim at the British embassy in Tehran, was summoned by the Foreign Ministry in response to the UK’s continued destructive and interventionist actions and statements,” the official news agency IRNA reported.

Iran’s foreign ministry “considers the statements and positions of the British authorities and the recent sanctions… to be illegal and interventionist actions,” it added.

The UK’s new sanctions regime will expand existing penalties by setting new standards to hit individuals and entities.

These include any activities by Iran that “undermine Middle Eastern and international peace, stability and security,” as well as “the use and dissemination of Iranian weapons technology.”

Russia is accused of using Iranian-made attack drones in Ukraine, while Tehran is a close strategic ally of Syria and supports Lebanon’s Hezbollah.

The latest measures in London come as Tehran responded to nationwide protests following the death in custody of Mahsa Amini in September.

The 22-year-old Iranian, of Kurdish origin, was arrested on suspicion of violating Iran’s strict dress code for women.

Since the start of the year, Britain has imposed dozens of asset freezes and travel bans on Iranian individuals and organizations, including the main commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Tehran’s attorney general, citing alleged human rights abuses.

The United States and the European Union have also tightened their own sanctions.
