Hamas Claims 195 Casualties in Israeli Strikes on Gaza Refugee Camp This Week

The Hamas government in Gaza revealed that 195 individuals lost their lives in Israeli airstrikes earlier this week on the Jabalia refugee camp, which is the most extensive refugee camp in the Palestinian territory.

Casualties from Multiple Attacks

These casualties encompass the victims of attacks on both Tuesday and Wednesday, which led to a substantial loss of lives and left hundreds wounded. The statement provided by the government press office stated a breakdown of 195 martyrs, 120 individuals who remain missing under the rubble, and 777 people wounded. It’s crucial to acknowledge that the accuracy of these figures has not been independently verified.

Mounting Death Toll

The Palestinian health ministry’s figures indicate a total of 8,796 casualties, with a significant number of them being women and children. This surge in casualties followed Israel’s extensive ground and air offensive, which was initiated in response to Hamas attacks on October 7. Israel contends that these attacks resulted in 1,400 casualties, with the majority being civilians.

Repeated Strikes on Jabalia Refugee Camp

The Jabalia refugee camp in Gaza became the target of Israeli airstrikes on two consecutive days. Israel stated that the raid on Tuesday successfully eliminated a top Hamas commander, Ibrahim Biari.

UN Human Rights Office Expresses Concerns

The UN Human Rights Office has raised concerns about the Israeli airstrikes on the Jabalia refugee camp. Given the substantial number of civilian casualties and the extensive destruction caused by these attacks, they have expressed the apprehension that these actions might be disproportionate and could potentially amount to war crimes.
