Short-Sea Shipping: DP World Aims to Decarbonize

Dubai-based ports operator DP World aims to power 5% of its short-sea shipping with zero-emission fuels by 2030. The company, a major player in global port operations, has joined the First Movers Coalition (FMC) to emphasize its commitment to decarbonization and the adoption of emerging technologies for a sustainable future.

Global Ports Operator’s Green Pledge

With operations spanning ports from Buenos Aires to Hong Kong, DP World manages 9% of the world’s handling capacity, making it one of the top five global ports operators. This ambitious move aligns with DP World’s broader sustainability strategy, which targets carbon neutrality by 2040 and net-zero emissions by 2050.

First Movers Coalition for Collective Impact: Short-Sea Shipping

The FMC, led by the World Economic Forum and the US Government, focuses on addressing decarbonization challenges in sectors that contribute significantly to global emissions. Shipping is one of the seven hard-to-abate sectors, collectively responsible for 30% of global emissions. By joining the coalition, DP World becomes part of a collective effort to drive investments in zero-emission solutions and scale their production.

Strategic Collaboration: Zero Emission Port Alliance: Short-Sea Shipping

In a related development at COP28, DP World, alongside APM Terminals (APMT), announced the establishment of the Zero Emission Port Alliance (Zepa). This industry-wide collaboration aims to accelerate the transition to zero emissions for container handling equipment (CHE) at ports. Zepa, set to commence operations in early 2024, invites industry participants, including terminal operators, port authorities, and government bodies, to join forces in increasing the adoption of battery-electric CHE and driving emissions reductions across ports.
