Dubai Police Impound 101 E-Bikes in Major Crackdown on Teenagers Speeding Over 100 km/h

DUBAI, UAE – In a decisive move to ensure public safety, Dubai Police have launched a major crackdown on reckless e-bike use, impounding 101 electric bikes and issuing 130 fines in a single week. The intensive operation targets teenagers who are illegally modifying e-bikes to reach speeds exceeding 100 km/h and riding them dangerously on pedestrian and jogging tracks.

The crackdown, prompted by numerous public complaints, highlights a growing trend of youths using heavily modified e-bikes in areas like Nad Al Sheba, creating significant risks for pedestrians, athletes, and the riders themselves.

The Danger of Modified E-Bikes on Pedestrian Paths

Authorities have raised the alarm over teenagers transforming ordinary e-bikes, designed for casual commuting, into high-speed machines capable of motorcycle-like performance. These unauthorized modifications make the vehicles unstable and unsafe for the dedicated jogging and walking tracks where they are being used.

Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Assistant Commandant for Operations Affairs at Dubai Police, issued a stern warning about this reckless behavior. He emphasized that such high-speed activity on paths shared with pedestrians and athletes poses a grave danger to public safety and will not be tolerated.

Enforcement Action: Patrols, Impounds, and Parental Meetings

Following the surge in complaints, Dubai Police, in coordination with partner agencies, initiated a targeted enforcement campaign. Increased patrols were deployed to identified hotspots to apprehend riders engaged in speeding and other dangerous activities.

The result was the impoundment of 101 modified e-bikes and the issuance of 130 fines for various traffic violations. In a significant step to address the root cause, police also called in the parents of the young riders for meetings. These discussions underscored the critical role of parental supervision and education in preventing future violations and ensuring their children’s safety.

A Call for Responsibility and Safety Awareness

A central theme of the police’s message is the need for greater parental vigilance. Major General Al Mazrouei stressed that many of these risky behaviors stem from a lack of proper oversight at home. He urged families to set clear boundaries and understand the capabilities of the personal mobility devices their children are using.

Authorities reiterated essential safety guidelines for all e-bike users:

  • Ride only in designated bike lanes and areas.

  • Always wear a helmet and protective gear.

  • Avoid all unauthorized modifications that enhance speed beyond legal limits.

  • Use high-visibility clothing, especially during low-light conditions.

Broader Context and Ongoing Efforts

This week-long blitz is part of a larger, sustained effort by Dubai Police to regulate the use of personal mobility devices. In previous campaigns, authorities have impounded thousands of e-scooters and e-bikes for violations, including riding on undesignated public roads.

Looking ahead, Dubai Police plan to roll out expanded traffic safety and awareness campaigns in residential communities and near popular public tracks. The ultimate goal is to foster a culture of responsibility, protect all road and track users, and ensure that the emirate’s mobility landscape evolves safely and sustainably.
