The vision, articulated by CEO Paul Griffiths, is to create a fully contactless travel experience where biometric technology and automation replace every manual touchpoint, transforming the airport from a processing facility into a seamless hospitality space.
The “Invisible” Airport of the Future
The core of this transformation is the belief that physical check-in is now redundant. “We should be aiming to get rid of the check-in desk altogether,” stated Griffiths. He argues that since payment and booking are completed online, the subsequent physical check-in step is an unnecessary bottleneck in the modern travel journey.
Instead, the future Dubai International Airport (DXB) will function as an “invisible, seamless and integrated” environment. The goal is to create a passenger experience akin to a luxury hotel lobby, where the focus shifts from queue management to personalized hospitality. Griffiths envisions a future where “It should be a short walk to your aeroplane,” with staff freed from administrative tasks to enhance passenger comfort.
How the Contactless Journey Will Work

Biometric Identity Verification: From the moment passengers enter the terminal, facial recognition technology will verify their identity. This system will automate the entire journey—replacing manual checks at security, immigration, and boarding gates with a simple, walk-through process.
Automated Baggage Handling: The cumbersome process of printing and attaching baggage tags will be eliminated. Luggage will be manufactured with embedded, machine-readable barcodes. Passengers will simply drop their bags at a designated automated point, from where an intelligent system will sort and route them directly to the correct aircraft.
AI-Powered Security Screening: Advanced, AI-driven 3D scanners will be deployed that can detect prohibited items—including laptops and liquids over 100ml—without requiring passengers to unpack their bags.
