‘Yes’: Biden said the United States will protect Taiwan against Chinese military news

[ad_1]

After seemingly suggesting changes to the decades-long “strategic ambiguity” policy, these comments prompted the White House to quickly clarify.

US President Joe Biden has stated that if Taiwan is attacked by China, the United States will protect Taiwan. This seems to run counter to the long-term “strategic ambiguity” policy of the United States.

“Yes,” when asked about defending Taiwan at the CNN City Hall, he replied that the Taiwanese government has been under increasing military and political pressure from Beijing, and Beijing claims that Taiwan is its own. “We have a commitment to this.”

The United States has been pursuing a policy of “strategic ambiguity” for many years and has provided key military support to Taiwan, but it has not explicitly promised to provide assistance in the event of an attack by China.

The White House later told reporters that the US policy toward Taiwan “has not changed.”

“The defense relationship between the United States and Taiwan is guided by the Taiwan Relations Act. We will abide by our commitments under the Act. We will continue to support Taiwan’s self-defense and we will continue to oppose any unilateral changes to the status quo,” a spokesperson Say.

In August, an official in the Biden administration stated that after the president seemed to imply that the United States would defend the island if Taiwan was attacked, the US policy on Taiwan had not changed.

Earlier this month, President Biden seemed to imply that there was a “protocol‘China and the United States are on the Taiwan issue.

China has increased pressure on Taiwan in recent months Dozens of planes Entered the island’s air defense identification zone (ADIZ) during a series of flights that began on October 1st, China’s National Day.

Taiwan’s Defense Minister Qiu Guozheng said earlier this month that the military tensions across the Taiwan Strait are the most serious in more than 40 years, and that by 2025, China will be able to launch a “full-scale” invasion.

Taiwan says it is an independent country and will Defensive Its freedom and democracy.

China, which has been modernizing its armed forces and developing advanced weapons, condemns the so-called “collusion” between Washington and Taipei.

At the city hall, when asked whether the United States can keep up with China’s rapid military development, Biden also said “yes.”

“China, Russia and the rest of the world know that we are the most powerful army in the history of the world,” he said.

Biden said: “What you have to worry about is whether they will engage in activities that might get them into serious mistakes.”

“I don’t want to fight a cold war with China. I just want China to understand that we will not retreat and we will not change any of our views.”

On Thursday, the Financial Times reported that China has Tested two hypersonic missiles -One in July, one in August-this move “shocked” the United States.

The United States and Russia are also developing hypersonic weapons, which are more difficult to defend than existing ballistic missiles.
