Expo 2020 and Cartier celebrate the official completion of the Women’s Pavilion – Dubai Blog

Expo 2020 Dubai and Cartier held a grand celebration at Al Wasl Square to celebrate the official inauguration of the Women’s Pavilion. The celebration was sponsored by His Highness Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the UAE Gender Balance Committee and Chairman of Dubai. mechanism. The four artists commissioned to plan and design the pavilion, Laura Gonzalez, eL Seed, Nadine Labaki and Mélanie Laurent, and “Friends of the Brand” Monica Belluci, Vanessa Kirby, Ramla Ali and Amira Casar, Yasmine Sabry, Fatima Albanawi, Dhafer L’Abidine, Fouz Al Fahad, Farida Khelfa and Elisa Sednaoui were also among the guests present.

In the exhibition titled “New Perspectives”, the Women’s Pavilion at Expo 2020, organized in cooperation with Cartier, invites visitors to celebrate and recognize the central role that women have played in history to this day. By demonstrating these contributions, as well as the challenges still faced by women around the world, the pavilion attempts to expand on an important principle: When women thrive, humans thrive.

His Excellency Reem Al Hashimy said at the opening ceremony: “The UAE has always placed gender equality and women’s empowerment at the core of its spirit since its inception, recognizing the great potential of women to contribute to the country’s rapid progress-this belief has gained Response is critical to sustainable development on a global scale.

“We will soon usher in the beginning of another 50 years of prosperity in the UAE. The Women’s Pavilion at Expo 2020 tells the stories of Arab and Muslim women pioneers over the centuries. The concept of typology has strengthened the key role of gender equality and women’s empowerment in protecting the future of mankind and the planet-we welcome the world’s interaction with the Women’s Pavilion and remind all of us that each of us can play a role in the next journey.”

Cyrille Vigneron added: “The road to gender equality is a long way, and the worst thing we can do is to go backwards. All countries are advancing in their own way, but in terms of gender equality, we have also seen regressions. We must move forward from where we started. This is a place to be fortunate and celebrated.”

His Excellency Mona Ghanem Al Marri, Director-General of the Dubai Government Media Office and Deputy Chairman of the UAE Gender Balance Commission, stated that the first pavilion dedicated to women’s contribution at the World Expo was established in the UAE in improving women’s national progress and social development in the past 50 years. Christina Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank, reminded the audience in her speech what kind of influence women will have when they are given positions of power and influence.

A two-day art, celebration and discussion project

Liz Bohannon is a social entrepreneur and former Cartier Women’s Initiative researcher. Hind Alowais, Vice President of International Participation Department of Expo 2020 Dubai, chaired the dialogue between former UN Women’s Executive Directors Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka and Cyrille Vigneron, focusing on the ripple effect of women’s empowerment on society, and ultimately proved that improving women’s status is the solution The key to the most pressing issue in the world.

Creating new and innovative ways for girls to master the knowledge and skills to thrive is a key topic of conversation.

The day ends with a conversation about climate change and the role that artists and activists can play in raising awareness of one of the most critical issues facing our planet. Actress and filmmaker Vanessa Kirby collaborates with Salma Abdulai, founder and CEO of Amaati Co; Kate Horner, Deputy Executive Director, Amazon Front; Mélanie Laurent, actress, screenwriter and director; “Claudia Andujar “The Struggle of Yanomami” exhibition curator Thiago Nogueira; and the Waorani leader and activist Nemonte Nenquimo supported by Amazon Frontline.

Experience carefully curated by different creators

Relying on Cartier’s role in supporting artistic expression, a diverse community of creators and artists participated and contributed to the design and curation of the Women’s Pavilion. Interior architect Laura Gonzalez designed the upper part of the facade together with Dubai-born artist Kholoud Sharafi and French lighting designer Pauline David. Laura commented on her contribution: “When Cartier asked me to design the facade of the Women’s Pavilion, this project represented the fact that all women can realize their dreams. The first impression is very important, so I am very grateful. This opportunity.”

The unique calligraphy of French Tunisian artist eL Seed occupies the lower part of the facade. He pointed out: “The facade is a platform that can amplify the voices of Nepalese women and tell a story. I linked the facade to the “calligraphy graffiti” project I created in a small village, which is two to three miles away from Kathmandu. Within an hour’s drive, the project was completely rebuilt by women using earthquake-resistant bricks after the 2015 Nepal earthquake.”

Lebanese actress Nadine Labaki is the first Arab female director to be nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film category. She directed this short film. When guests enter the pavilion, she stands out through the lens of a young activist The meaning of gender equality comes from all over the world. “We need to start thinking in other ways and explore how the world transitions to where it should be. The pandemic has revealed many failures in our system and things that need to be changed-I have provided an opportunity for a short documentary of work in the Women’s Pavilion, Let me jump on the train of this alternative thinking and start the journey.” She said.

French actress, screenwriter and director Mélanie Laurent took over the second floor of the pavilion and planned an immersive exhibition that promoted dialogue in the fields of culture, art and society in three parts. She emphasized: “Today is better; we have the opportunity, we have worked hard, don’t really have to make this choice. Let us hope that tomorrow, everyone can enjoy the same freedom.”
