The ban also includes air and navigation points, according to the statement.

“The decision follows the recent discovery of abuses and does not limit the practice of these sports to areas identified in user licenses and trespass areas where such activities are prohibited,” said a statement issued by the UAE’s official news agency, Wam.

It said the regulations were developed in coordination with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and were in line with relevant guidelines.

Shooting may get exceptions, it said. It said entities with work contracts or commercial or advertising projects that rely on the use of drone photography must communicate with licensing authorities to obtain the necessary exceptions and permits to carry out their work and projects.

The ministry reminded users that anyone who engages in these activities during this time and disregards the guidelines will be held legally responsible.

Last week, Houthi rebels in Yemen targeted a fuel depot in Abu Dhabi and the city’s main airport, raising tensions in the oil-exporting region.

The UAE blamed the attack on Houthi rebels in Yemen, saying such a guilty target would not go unpunished.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said the UAE “reserves the right to retaliate against these terrorist attacks and this heinous criminal escalation”.

Houthi rebels have been responsible for several drone attacks on Saudi Arabian oil facilities in the past. The UAE is part of a Saudi-led coalition against the Houthis in Yemen.
