Etihad Airways ‘Sustainable50’ A350 inaugural flight to New York

Etihad Airways celebrates the arrival of its new Airbus A350-1000 in the United States following its maiden commercial flight from Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) on 30 June. The 371-passenger aircraft is one of five new Airbus A350s to join Etihad’s fleet this year.

From today, all Etihad flights to New York and Chicago O’Hare International Airport will be operated by the A350, joining the Mumbai and Delhi routes starting in April this year.

Etihad passengers travelling to the US can use Etihad’s US Preclearance, the only US Customs and Border Protection facility in the Middle East. This allows US-bound passengers to handle all immigration, customs and agricultural checks in Abu Dhabi before boarding, avoiding immigration and queues upon arrival in the US.

As a partnership between Etihad Airways, Airbus and Rolls-Royce in 2021, Sustainable50 plans to use Etihad Airways’ A350 as a flight test bed to develop new initiatives, procedures and technologies to Reduce carbon emissions. This will build on Etihad’s experience with a similar Greenliner programme for the Boeing 787.

The Airbus A350 powered by the Rolls-Royce Trent XWB is one of the most efficient aircraft types in the world, reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 25% compared to the previous generation twin-aisle aircraft.

Etihad Airways recently established a formal framework with Airbus to collaborate on sustainability in a number of areas, including the promotion and commercialization of sustainable aviation fuels, waste and weight management, and the development of data-driven analytics.

Guest experience

The aircraft features Etihad’s latest cabin interior, inspired by Abu Dhabi, designed to be more efficient and sustainable. Etihad is renowned for its high-quality aircraft, and the A350 is full of thoughtful design details to deliver exceptional comfort and enhanced privacy.

Etihad Airways’ signature lighting design is inspired by the shadows cast by palm trees in Abu Dhabi. Cabin lighting simulates natural ambient light and is designed to enhance the guest experience, provide an optimal sleeping environment and reduce the effects of jet lag. The Airbus A350 also offers the quietest cabin experience for a wide-body aircraft.

Another feature that helps reduce light pollution and therefore jet lag is the new dark mode interface on the E-BOX inflight entertainment system. Mobile and Wi-Fi connectivity is also available throughout the aircraft.

Etihad Airways has also crafted a ‘Little VIP’ experience for its youngest guests. The scheme provides family-friendly children’s facilities for the newly launched Warner Bros. World theme park in Abu Dhabi. The A350 also has a special new feature, an interactive flight map that kids can explore with the help of some Jurassic-era friends.

Elevated Business Class features 44 business studios with sliding doors, providing each suite with a high degree of privacy. Each seat faces forward with direct aisle access. The Business Class seat is over 20 inches wide, converts to a 79-inch long full-flat bed, and has ample storage for easy access.

Noise-cancelling headphones and an 18.5-inch TV screen provide a cinematic experience, allowing you to enjoy Etihad Airways’ extensive in-flight entertainment offering. The business seat is cleverly equipped with a built-in wireless charging base and Bluetooth headset pairing.

Business class passengers can choose from a carefully curated à la carte menu, while those on long-haul flights can enjoy Etihad’s signature ‘Dine Anytime’ service.

Etihad’s spacious Economy Class is equipped with 327 Smart Seats in a 3-3-3 arrangement, with 45 ‘Economy’ seats adding 4 inches of legroom. The Crystal Cabin award-winning seat was selected after Etihad Airways’ extensive customer testing and based on its comfort and sustainability certification. Seats feature Etihad’s signature bolster headrests, USB charging and Bluetooth headset pairing, as well as a 13.3-inch screen, allowing you to enjoy Etihad’s award-winning in-flight entertainment system.

On long-haul flights, passengers receive blankets and pillows for extra comfort and comfort kits, as well as complimentary meals from Etihad’s award-winning cabin crew.
