Abu Dhabi residents welcomed the expansion of express bus services to new areas of the emirate, stressing that it will help reduce waiting times and simplify transportation.

The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) of the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has announced the launch of the ‘Abu Dhabi Express’ bus service in a new area of the emirate of Abu Dhabi in response to increasing passenger demand since its launch in March 2022.

The first phase of the project includes 38 buses from the private sector, which have transported more than 70,000 passengers on 14,500 trips since launch.

The ITC has announced the implementation of the second phase, starting on June 30, 2022, to expand the scope of services. In addition to the route between Abu Dhabi and Al Mirfa City and Zayed City in the Al Dhafra area, it also adds between Abu Dhabi City to Baniyas taxi stand and Al Mafraq Workers City to Abu Dhabi City a new route. The Lifeline Hospital bus station in Abu Dhabi City has also been added to the network.

“This is a great move because it will help improve transportation. We have spent a long time waiting for the bus to go to the city,” said Abdul Salam Kabuye, a Ugandan expat living in Al Mafraq Workers city.

“On weekends, sometimes you might have to queue for an hour for the bus because there are so many workers heading to the city and there are few buses.”

Syed Ali, a Bangladeshi worker living in Baniyas, said he was happy with the additional route of the express bus service.

“I go to Baniyas every weekend to see my brother who is staying and working there. But sometimes I have been facing the problem of waiting for a long time for the bus,” Ali said. “But with the new route of the express bus service in the area, it will solve the traffic problem for many residents.”

Another resident, Mohammed Shadab, an Indian national who lives and works in Al Dhafra, said he travels to the city every weekend but sometimes skips due to limited bus service.

“I’m delighted that express bus service has been extended to our area. This will help reduce wait times and provide convenience for many of us,” he said.

The service expansion is due to a partnership between ITC and several private sector companies, based on the former’s role in overseeing public transport operations across the emirate. It diversifies services, provides faster transportation options on public buses, facilitates community mobility, and allows passengers to reach their destinations comfortably in the shortest possible time. In addition, the service aims to strengthen the public bus transport network to increase its capacity, provide diverse transport options for different segments of society, and enable the integration of various bus transport modes.

The service operates on new routes 7 days a week, with schedules depending on demand to meet the needs of passengers seeking to benefit from the service. Abu Dhabit Express is a direct, non-stop service, making its route the fastest way to travel quickly, comfortably and safely.

To enhance the aesthetics of the bus station and add new artistic features, ITC also announced that it has redesigned the minibus station adjacent to Abu Dhabi’s main bus terminal (formerly a taxi stand) with artwork and beautiful colours.

At the same time, ITC confirmed that improvements to the public bus transport network are in line with efforts to enhance connectivity between bus network routes.
