Emirates airline Etihad Airways has started operating its new Airbus A350-1000 on the Abu Dhabi-New York route.
The inaugural flight from Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) took place on 30 June.
The 371-passenger aircraft is one of five new Airbus A350s to join Etihad’s fleet this year.
From now on, all Etihad flights to New York and Chicago O’Hare International Airport will be operated by the A350, joining the Mumbai and Delhi routes that begin in April this year.
Martin Drew, Senior Vice President, Global Sales and Cargo, Etihad Airways, said: “With the introduction of the A350, we have almost doubled the premium capacity of our New York and Chicago routes to 44 seats in business class, offering a level of performance comparable to other international airlines. First class.”
Business class on this aircraft has 44 business single rooms with sliding doors, providing privacy in each suite. Etihad’s Economy Class is configured with 327 seats in a 3-3-3 arrangement, with 45 “Economy” seats adding 4 inches of legroom.
The Airbus A350, powered by the Rolls-Royce Trent XWB, is a fuel-efficient aircraft that reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 25% compared to the previous generation twin-aisle aircraft.
As a partnership between Etihad Airways, Airbus and Rolls-Royce in 2021, Sustainable50 plans to use Etihad Airways’ A350 as a flight test bed to develop new initiatives, procedures and technologies to Reduce carbon emissions. The airline said it would also draw on Etihad’s experience with a similar Greenliner programme for Boeing 787s.
