Del Mar Street in Abu Dhabi has been renamed Syed bin Ahmed Al-Otaiba Street in honour of prominent Emirati cultural and business figures.
The Abu Dhabi Media Office said Al Otaiba was recognised for its enormous contribution to the UAE capital’s economy and cultural heritage.
The street name change follows instructions from UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed, Chairman of the Crown Prince Court of Abu Dhabi and member of the Executive Council, inaugurated Saeed Bin Ahmed Al Otaiba Street in Abu Dhabi after the name change.
Al Otaiba’s family and senior officials attended the street’s inauguration.
Born in 1916 in the Al Dhahr community of Abu Dhabi, Al Otaiba started his career as a pearl trader and later traded commodities throughout the Arab region.
Emiratis have also served in various government entities after the establishment of the UAE in 1971, including as Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Emirates Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, and as a respected poet.
