Dh3,000 fine for driver
Abu Dhabi Police have warned residents against using private vehicles to transport passengers illegally, stressing that they pose a threat to their safety.
In a new campaign, the force also warned that it has stepped up measures to crack down on motorists who use private vehicles to transport residents illegally.
According to Abu Dhabi Police, the illegal transport of passengers in private vehicles is considered an uncivilized phenomenon that has negative social, economic and security implications.
Authorities say some drivers who drive private cars as taxis do not have licenses issued by UAE authorities and may even be in the country illegally.
“We urge people not to take private vehicles that operate as illegal taxis. Residents should only use approved and licensed taxis that meet international safety requirements and standards,” said Talib Salem Al Al, Director of Abu Dhabi Transport Security Investigations Major Kalbani said the Department of Transportation.
“We urge people to exercise caution and work with authorities to combat illegal shipments to keep everyone safe,” he added.
Abu Dhabi Police, in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Integrated Transport Centre, has stepped up inspection activities to crack down on illegal taxis and catch offenders.
The penalty for illegally transporting passengers is a fine of Dh3,000, loss of 24 traffic points and impoundment of the car for 30 days.
Police said the illegal transport of passengers had serious implications for the “health and safety of society”.
Passengers put themselves at risk by entering an unauthorized driver’s vehicle, the official noted.
In the event of an accident, legal prosecution becomes difficult when the driver is unidentified or undocumented, according to authorities.
The police have asked drivers of private cars not to engage in passenger transport activities without permission from the competent authorities.
Abu Dhabi police have seized thousands of private cars after their owners were found to be illegally transporting passengers.
Motorists were mostly caught by undercover police officers while picking up commuters in Abu Dhabi.
Police investigations revealed that most of the vehicles involved in the illegal taxi service were owned by individuals.
