RTA saves record $23.14 million through green initiatives

[ad_1]

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) implemented 36 energy and green economy programmes in 2021, saving a record AED85 million (US$23.14 million) and 68 million kWh of electricity.

In addition, RTA has saved 55 million gallons of water, 21 million liters of gasoline, 1.8 million liters of diesel, and a reduction of approximately 86 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. It has also diverted around 450,000 tonnes of waste from landfills through effective waste management practices, said Mattar Al Tayer, RTA director general and chairman of its executive board.

As a result, RTA achieved its target energy efficiency in 2021 with an 18% reduction in total energy use across all operations and projects compared to average consumption from 2016 to 2019. During the same period, total emissions decreased by 13% and energy costs decreased by 10%.

Sustainability is a key pillar

“Sustainability is an important pillar of RTA’s strategic objectives, and the concept of sustainability is deeply embedded in RTA’s corporate performance. Protecting the environment, optimizing energy use, reducing carbon emissions and ensuring asset sustainability have become priorities,” Al Tayer said.

The RTA has a clear roadmap to achieve zero emissions from public transport in Dubai by 2050. In the process, RTA is becoming the first government entity in the Middle East and North Africa to develop a comprehensive roadmap for public transport and its public transport. infrastructure, Al Tayer said.

Metrics and Results

Compared to the 2016-2019 average, the 2021 RTA Energy Analysis Report shows an 18% drop in total energy consumption and a 36% drop in gasoline consumption.

The drop was attributed to increased use of hybrid and electric taxis by Dubai Taxi, as well as a 15% reduction in diesel consumption, despite an increase in the public bus fleet.

The RTA has upgraded its old bus fleet, replacing them with modern buses equipped with environmentally friendly Euro 6 engines that meet European carbon emission norms.

Al Tayer explained that the report also showed an 11 percent increase in electricity consumption due to the operation of the 15-kilometer Dubai Metro 2020 route, which includes seven stations.

Projects and Initiatives

RTA has completed more than 95% of its green economy initiatives and projects, and the future direction is guided by a range of factors, including soft and shared mobility, sustainable mobility, circular economy, autonomous vehicles for passengers and cargo, and the development of customer-based Demand and future skills, concludes Al Tayer.

In 2021, the Dubai Metro 2020 project, which serves a densely populated area of 270,000 inhabitants, is officially operational.

The route of the route is based on several parameters, namely the expected number of passengers at each station, surrounding commercial activities and connections to other public transport modes such as buses at each station, which contribute to the sustainable development of Dubai.

Numerous road and bridge projects were also completed during the year, including the construction of 138 lane-kilometres of roads and nine overpasses to serve Expo 2020 Dubai. It has opened model bus stops, pedestrian bridges and cycle paths to transform Dubai into a bike-friendly city, which needs to provide appropriate options to encourage people to practice cycling. — arab trade news agency
