Some parents prefer Kandura to their child’s new school uniform

Male pupils in UAE public schools are allowed to wear traditional Emirati dress (Kandura) as an alternative to the new school uniform.
The Emirates Schools Agency (ESE) announced on Wednesday that it has decided to offer boys the option of wearing Emirati men’s clothing as school uniform in Cycles 2 and 3 (from Year 5 and above).
According to the ESE, from next week, boys in cycle 2 can wear Kandura as an optional uniform in addition to the new approved uniform, while students in cycle 3 can wear Kandura in addition to the new uniform with Hamdaniya or Kandura school uniform in gutrah (traditional Emirati hijab).
A previous survey showed some parents preferred Kandura over boys’ new school uniforms, which included shirts, ties and trousers.
ESE said it was keen to communicate closely with parents to support the education system moving forward.
ESE had earlier announced that all public school students in the UAE will wear the new uniforms starting this school year starting August 29.
ESE has introduced a new uniform for all public school students from Kindergarten to Grade 12.
Officials said the new uniforms, available in white and dark blue, are suitable for all age groups of all ages to meet their dynamic nature and provide an educational environment based on equal and positive interactions among students.
Sarah Bint Yusuf Al Amiri, Minister of State for Public Education and Advanced Technology and Chair of the Emirates Schools Institution (ESE), tweeted: “In response to the advice and wishes of parents, the choice to wear national clothes (Kandoura) is offered as an optional school uniform to boys in the 2nd and 3rd cycle.
“Parents are one of the elements of the success of the education process in the country and by working with them we will realize the government’s vision in this area.”
The new uniforms consist of a white shirt and skirt for the ninth grade girls and a white shirt, blue pants and tie for the boys in the same grade.
The uniform for boys in grades 1-4 consists of a formal white shirt with a logo, a tie and shorts or blue trousers, while girls in the same grade wear a formal white shirt with a logo or wide-leg blue culottes or blue trousers dress.
Their boys’ tracksuit consists of a white and blue T-shirt with white and blue pants or shorts, while the girls’ tracksuit consists of a white and blue T-shirt with pants or shorts.
For grades 9-12, boys wear a formal white shirt (long or short sleeve) with a tie and dark blue trousers. Their tracksuit consists of a white and dark blue T-shirt and dark blue sweatpants.
Girls in grades 9-12 wear a formal white shirt with dark blue wide-leg culottes or a maxi skirt. Sportswear for girls consists of a dark blue (long or short sleeve) sports t-shirt and pants.
