Buckingham Palace said on Thursday that Queen Elizabeth II’s doctors were “concerned” about her health and advised her to “continue to undergo medical supervision”.
Queen Elizabeth II has been facing health problems since October last year, making it difficult for her to walk and stand.
The announcement came a day after the 96-year-old monarch called off her Privy Council meeting.
The palace said the queen was “very comfortable” and remained at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, where she spent the summer.
The statement from the palace on the Queen’s health was highly unusual, AFP reported, adding that a note was passed on to Prime Minister Liz Truss and senior members of her team in parliament shortly before the palace’s announcement, prompting them to left the conference room.
Shortly after the announcement, Prime Minister Liz Truss said, “The whole country will be deeply concerned by the news that came from Buckingham Palace at lunchtime today.”
“My thoughts – and the thoughts of our British people – are with Her Majesty The Queen and her family at this time,” she tweeted.
Liz Truss met the Queen at Scotland’s Balmoral estate on Tuesday, when she was appointed British Prime Minister.
Prince Charles, 73, and his eldest son, Prince William, 40, are on their way to Scotland, according to AFP.
