A special feature is the steering tower inside the hybrid farm. So why does the tower turn? According to Praveen, this is a technology developed by Flora Consult to solve the following problems that occur in traditional vertical farms.
“Thanks to crop rotation, we can almost double the number of plants in a given area. On top of that, we can provide an even microclimate and ventilation for all plants. This helps growers save on both CAPEX and operational savings in lighting Expenses due to rotating towers, staying away from the sun and LEDs overnight.”

Revoponics are not limited to strawberries, but can also grow a variety of vegetables, fruit crops, herbs, and more. The system can be tailored to the total volume of the growing warehouse. The height of the Revoponics Grow Tower varies from 3.2 m to 4.6 m.
The hybrid setup allows sunlight to provide the plants with the required dose of light, while at night, the plants use LEDs for supplemental lighting. Towers use various materials. Flora’s patented design mixes planting towers, weather monitors, fertilizer controllers, racking systems and rotating mechanisms.

Flora Consult is a greenhouse builder in Kenya, Ethiopia, United Arab Emirates and now worldwide. Founded in 1997, the company has won several international awards for its projects.
In addition to this, Praveen has seen tremendous changes in the horticulture and flower industry. As the company has been developing large-scale projects for commercial hydroponic growers, including horticulture and flower growing, Flora Consult now offers products for vertical growers as well. Since the past 12 years, their focus has shifted to vegetables, strawberries and herbs.

Research that takes vertical farming to the next level
“Our only goal is to deliver viable projects. Together with growers, we will guide them step-by-step through the plan. We have established our in-house R&D center, called the Innovation and Training Center for Vertical Farming, to ensure success.”
The main goal of the R&D center is to develop vertical planting models with higher productivity, as well as energy-efficient planting systems. At the same time, protocols have been developed for various crop nutrition formulations. “Through all these trials, we collected and analyzed the results published in various studies on the benefits of various agricultural techniques compared to other agricultural techniques.”
In addition to grow towers, Flora Consult also offers polyethylene greenhouses, horizontal stack farms, horizontal and pyramidal NFT systems, home growers and more. The smallest farms start from 1000 square meters and the largest can reach 1000 hectares.

“Currently, we are working on creating a huge HortiVoltaic project in Africa. HortiVoltaics is an energy-efficient farming system combined with renewable energy.”
According to Praveen, HortiVoltaics and Revoponics are a deadly combination, as a 1,000-square-meter facility can deliver 50KW of power, enough for basic climate control requirements. As Praveen says, the largest vertical farm they’ve built to date is only 4,000 square meters. Next year, there will be a large HortiVoltaic project in Africa.
