Etihad Rail Links Abu Dhabi’s Main Cargo Terminal to Main Network

Etihad Rail, developer and operator of the UAE’s national rail network, has connected a major freight terminal, still under development, to the network’s main line.

The terminal at the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi (ICAD) is planned to be a logistics hub and will occupy more than 250,838 square metres when completed, Etihad Rail said on Friday.

It will be the largest inland cargo terminal in the country, handling more than 20 million tons of cargo annually.

Etihad Rail has completed track laying and successful testing on the new line extending from the Saudi Arabian border to the port of Fujairah.

The second stage of development

The development of the ICAD rail freight station is part of the second phase of the UAE’s national rail network.

Mohammed Al Marzouqi, Executive Director, Rail Relations, Etihad Rail, said: “This milestone brings us one step closer to achieving our goal of delivering an integrated transport linking industrial and manufacturing hubs with freight terminals and ports across the emirate system.”

“The strategic location of the ICAD rail freight station will also bring value to all our customers as it is the largest indoor rail freight station in the UAE.”

The terminal will include 22 buildings and major structures to support operations and will handle up to nine trains per day.

In addition to connecting Ruwais, Khalifa Port and container companies operating in Dubai’s Jebel Ali Port, it will enable cargo distribution between the GCC and the UAE, connecting quarries in the northern UAE to Abu Dhabi The industrial centers of the Mussafah region are connected.

“We are proud of this achievement, which supports our efforts to encourage companies to restructure their logistics operations and opt for rail logistics solutions that reduce costs, increase efficiency and provide safer transport of goods,” said Mr. Al Marzouqi.

24/7 operation

The terminal is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. When fully operational, it will handle more than 15 million tons of bulk raw materials, 1.5 tons of breakbulk and approximately 116,600 20-foot containers per year.

Etihad Rail said in May that 75% of the network was now complete. The construction is divided into two phases, of which the second phase consists of four phases.

Phase 1, freight services connecting the Shah and Habshan fields Rubeswhich opened in 2016.

On behalf of Adnoc, the freight service transports up to 22,000 tonnes of granular sulphur from Habshan and Shah to Ruwais each day.

The second phase connects Ghuwaifat in the west and Fujairah in the east.

The new network will reduce commute times by 30 to 40 percent compared to other modes of transportation.

The launch date of the passenger-only line and the exact route of the service have not been announced, but there are plans First Passenger Station Unveiled in Fujairah.

This passenger train It will travel at a speed of 200 kilometers per hour and will connect 11 cities and regions. Each can carry about 400 people.

The carriages will be equipped with vital amenities such as Wi-Fi, entertainment systems, charging points and catering services. Seats will include first class, business class and economy class.

Once live, the service is expected to carry more than By 2030, there will be 36 million people per year.
