UAE Cabinet forecasts strong winter tourism and approves first electric freighter

Sheikh Mohammed said the cabinet reviewed the UAE’s competition and development indicators, which showed that the country is growing at a higher level than before the pandemic.

“Our metrics today are stronger than those before the pandemic, our economy is growing faster than before the pandemic, and our tourism, business and development sectors are larger than before the pandemic,” Sheikh Mohammed tweeted.

“Under the leadership of my brother, Mohamed bin Zayed, the UAE has successfully overcome the Covid-19 pandemic. Our country is renowned globally for its remarkable economic growth and development.

“Many countries in the east and west of the world are still suffering from the effects of the pandemic.

“Global trade has yet to revive, but the UAE has become a model and global exception in terms of the speed and intensity of post-pandemic growth.”

The UAE’s premier development index rose to 156 indicators from 121 in 2020 and placed in the top 10 out of a further 432 global indicators, compared to 314 before the pandemic.

“We are number one in the world in terms of security and safety, infrastructure, flexibility of regulations, etc.,” said Sheikh Mohammed.

He said the UAE’s foreign trade volume exceeded Dh1 trillion in the first six months of the year, compared to Dh840 billion before the pandemic. The economy has grown by more than 22% so far this year.

In the first half of the year, tourism revenue exceeded Dh19 billion, while total hotel guests reached 12 million during the same period, an increase of 42%.

“We expect a strong tourism performance this winter,” Sheikh Mohammed said.

Figures released in August showed Dubai welcomed 7.12 million international tourists in the first half of 2022, almost triple the 2.52 million in the same period last year. The figure brings the emirate closer to the 8.36 million arrivals it reached before the Covid-19 pandemic in the first six months of 2019.

Dubai’s Ministry of Economy and Tourism attributes surge in tourist arrivals to Momentum generated by the Expo Dubai 2020, which ends on March 31, and the emirate’s status as a safe destination.

The first electric freighter

“Our goal is to create opportunities and encourage private sector participation in development, economic and social projects, and to develop partnerships that improve the quality of public services,” said Sheikh Mohammed.

The Cabinet also approved several international agreements, including an agreement with Spain to fight crime, a cooperation agreement with Indonesia and an agreement with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to set up an office in the UAE.
