Lending a helping hand: I believe in me
Young and old artists, hobbyists and professionals come together to benefit local nonprofit I Believe in Me, Inc. for the 11th Annual Lend A Hand Community Art Auction.
Lend a Hand was founded by artists Courtney Prahl and Whitney Dahlberg, and is supported by a partnership with The Muse, a downtown Frederick store that sells handmade items from local artists.
“We’re a regular at various charities, and I really wanted to create an event that inspires the community through art,” Dahlberg said.
“The event really made the participants feel like they were actively doing something and were directly connected to the charity,” Prahl added.
Lend a Hand is a unique event that combines community engagement with charitable giving.
Each year, Lend a Hand begins with an art call, inviting community members to purchase canvases to use to create art for the auction. All completed canvases will then be sent back to The Muse, where they will be displayed in silent auctions throughout September.
This year, more than 70 canvases were sold. Finished canvases are returned as artwork in a variety of mediums, including paint, collage, and fabric.
An added challenge this year is that all arts have an overarching theme of “I Believe in Me”, inspired by I Believe in Me’s guiding mission to develop future community leaders. Participants are encouraged to create art based on people or things that inspire them to believe in themselves.
All proceeds from canvas sales and auctions will go directly to I Believe in Me. I Believe in Me’s mission is to impact the growth and development of youth between the ages of 6 and 16. As an after-school program, the organization provides academic support, mentoring, community outreach, and character development, all designed to create influential future community leaders. I Believe in Me was founded by Aje Hill in 2016 to help children create a path to a successful future.
The artworks will be on display at The Muse at 19 N. Market St. in downtown Frederick on October 1.
All works are available for bidding in the month-long silent auction, which ends on the first Saturday of October 1 at 9pm. Head over to The Muse to see the exhibition in person, or visit auctria.events/lendahand2022 to watch and bid online.
