The complex can produce 1 million kilograms of leafy greens annually, using 95% less water than conventional farming
The UAE Vice President visited the UAE First Crop (ECO 1), the world’s largest vertical farm, which recently opened in Dubai.
During the visit, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, was briefed on the innovative technologies used to power state-of-the-art hydroponic farms.
Sheikh Mohammed said this unique initiative reflects the country’s commitment to food security by promoting sustainable production systems and resilient agricultural practices. He said the UAE has maintained the highest level of food security through one of the most comprehensive programmes in the world to address this important issue.
“The UAE will continue to make the right investments in technology and people to make food production and supply more flexible and sustainable,” Sheikh Mohammed said.

The $40 million facility was developed by a joint venture between Emirates Catering (EKFC), one of the world’s largest catering operators serving more than 100 airlines, and Crop One, an industry leader in technology-driven indoor vertical farming. The facility, which opened in July, can produce more than 1,000,000 kilograms of high-quality leafy greens annually while using 95% less water than conventional farming.
The farm currently grows spinach, kale, arugula and four types of lettuce, namely Romaine, Ruby Sky, Lalique and Batavia.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid noted that the Emirates Group “has made a significant contribution to realising the UAE’s vision to be a leader in shaping the future of humanity”.
“The world’s largest vertical farm in Dubai embodies the UAE’s goal of providing solutions to the world’s greatest challenges and advancing innovation to create a sustainable and prosperous tomorrow,” he said.
Located near Al Maktoum International Airport in the heart of Dubai World, the hydroponic facility grows more than 1 million plants and provides a daily yield of 3,000 kilograms at any given point. Leafy greens grown at the facility will be used to serve meals to Emirates and other airline passengers. People in the UAE will be able to buy these products at Bustanica-branded stores.
