New Delhi: Liz Truss resigned as prime minister on Thursday, just two months after Boris Johnson’s exit and exactly 45 days after she was appointed to lead Britain through the economic crisis , putting the ruling Conservatives in another leadership race to elect a new prime minister, despite growing calls for a general election.
Truss, who narrowly defeated former finance minister Rishi Sunak in September, won the role in a general apathy from the British public. “Liz Truss has been removed from office by the Conservative Party who chose her as Prime Minister 45 days ago. Without one, we will have an unprecedented three prime ministers and five prime ministers in four months without a democratic process,” Lloyd Hardy, founder of pro-democracy group Gov2.UK, said in a statement. Truss is the fourth British prime minister in six years to be led by Tory members rather than the public. Hardy said the polls showed the Conservatives trailing the opposition Labour Party by 30 points. “They’re going to be pretty much wiped out. The Democratic majority doesn’t want them.”
“We can’t let a handful of Conservative MPs decide who runs the UK, that’s not democracy at all. After Truss resigned on Thursday, Labour leader Kirstarmer repeated the party’s call for an immediate election. Truss has rejected calls for general elections in the past. Polls showing early elections could lead to the annihilation of the Conservative Party after 12 years in power.
