Liz Truss resigns: Conservatives ignore growing calls for early election World News

[ad_1]

New Delhi: Liz Truss resigned as prime minister on Thursday, just two months after Boris Johnson’s exit and exactly 45 days after she was appointed to lead Britain through the economic crisis , putting the ruling Conservatives in another leadership race to elect a new prime minister, despite growing calls for a general election.

Truss, who narrowly defeated former finance minister Rishi Sunak in September, won the role in a general apathy from the British public. According to a YouGov poll released the day she won the Conservative election, 12% thought she would be “good” or “great” as prime minister, while 52% thought she would be “poor” or “bad” in role middle.

But her approval ratings took an even bigger hit on Wednesday, after weeks of free-fall in Britain’s currency and stock markets, which finally prompted Truss to make a U-turn on her economic agenda. A YouGov poll showed her net approval rating of -70, making her one of the UK’s least popular prime ministers.

“Liz Truss has been removed from office by the Conservative Party who chose her as Prime Minister 45 days ago. This happened because she did not call a general election to gain the personal mandate of the people. If the Conservative Party comes back with another leader without a general election , it will happen again. Without one, we will have an unprecedented three prime ministers and five prime ministers in four months without a democratic process,” Lloyd Hardy, founder of pro-democracy group Gov2.UK, said in a statement. Truss told HT after his resignation.

Truss is the fourth British prime minister in six years to be led by Tory members rather than the public. Hardy said the polls showed the Conservatives trailing the opposition Labour Party by 30 points. “They’re going to be pretty much wiped out. The Democratic majority doesn’t want them.”

“We can’t let a handful of Conservative MPs decide who runs the UK, that’s not democracy at all. As Home Secretary Suella Braverman said in her resignation letter, the Conservatives have repeatedly reneged on Their manifesto promised and changed their leaders and policies many times. We need to hold elections to give the people a voice. No one who values democracy will object to that,” Hardy added.

Before Truss’ disastrous U-turn, a petition to Britain’s parliament calling for an early election to gather 657,586 signatures by Thursday night continued to grow. After Truss resigned on Thursday, Labour leader Kirstarmer repeated the party’s call for an immediate election. Truss has rejected calls for general elections in the past. Polls showing early elections could lead to the annihilation of the Conservative Party after 12 years in power.
