Death toll from Tropical Storm Nargay in Philippines climbs to 72

[ad_1]

Tropical Storm Nargay, which caused flooding and landslides in the southern province, has killed 72 people, the Philippine disaster agency said Saturday.

Agency spokesman Bernardo Rafelito Alejandro told DZMM radio that Maguindanao province was the worst hit with 67 deaths, two in Sultan Kudarat and two in South Cotabato. One person was killed, and the remaining casualties were spread across the Visayas region of the central Philippines.

He said 33 others were injured and 14 were missing.

The tropical storm, with maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 160 kilometers per hour, made landfall in the eastern province of Catanduanes early Saturday.

In its latest bulletin, the National Weather Service said Saturday will bring heavy and sometimes torrential rain in the capital region and nearby provinces as it crosses the main island of Luzon and heads to the South China Sea.

Search and rescue teams pulled bodies from the water and thick mud after Nalgae triggered floods and landslides on Friday.

“We are now calling all rescue teams and will be briefing before deployment,” said Imam Nasrallah, an official with the Maguindanao disaster agency. “It’s not raining anymore, so this will help our search. and operation.”

An average of 20 tropical storms hit the Philippines each year.
