FBI warns of ‘widespread’ threat to New Jersey synagogue
The FBI said Thursday it had received credible information about a “widespread” threat to New Jersey synagogues, a warning that prompted some municipalities to send additional police to guard houses of worship. The FBI’s Newark office released a statement urging synagogues to “take every safety precaution to protect your community and facility,” but did not say who created the threat or why. In Jersey City, Mayor Steven Fulop said police would be stationed at seven synagogues in the city and would increase foot patrols in the wider Jewish community. In 2019, two attackers motivated by anti-Semitic hatred killed three people, as well as a police officer, at a Jewish market in Jersey City.

Paul Pelosi, 82, is resting at home recovering from injuries to his head, arms and hands. He spent most of his time in the intensive care unit, according to people familiar with the matter. David DePape, 42, has been charged by federal prosecutors with attempting to kidnap a speaker and assault a relative of a federal official. On Tuesday, he also pleaded not guilty to several state felony charges.
Cherokees demand U.S. honor 187 promise
In 1835, American officials traveled to the Cherokee capital in Georgia to sign a treaty forcing the Cherokees to leave their lands in the southern United States and open it to white settlers. The New Ecota Treaty sent thousands on a death march to new land in Oklahoma. The Cherokees were forced to abide by the treaty at gunpoint. But while it stipulated that the state would be entitled to a non-voting seat in the House of Representatives, Congress backed away on that part of the deal. Now, with the growing movement for greater representation and sovereignty in the Indian state, 187 years later, the Cherokees are pushing for their representation.
