One of the region’s most popular cultural events, Dubai Design Week, returns for its eighth season from 8-13 November. This annual event showcases the work of some of the region’s top creative designers in a city that doesn’t shy away from bold, innovative designs. Visitors can look forward to installations, workshops, exhibitions and more at an art event that never disappoints.

The theme for this year’s installation project is “Design for Impact” – focusing on designing a sustainable future. Walking through the buildings of the Dubai Design District (d3), visitors will encounter several installations that provide food for thought and explore alternative eco-friendly options for architecture and design.

Highlights include “Palm Revival,” which showcases the conversion of date palm waste into screens to provide natural shading. The installation proposes “palm” screens as a green alternative to traditional bus shelters. In another installation, sand-based concrete “from the dunes and trees”, a solid surface material made from dates and the region’s first plant-based vegan leather were proposed as sustainable building materials.

From desert to sea, Al Gargoor installations from Bahrain. Traditional fishing nets are upcycled and combined with traditional palm tree weaving and textiles to create creative spaces. Also not to be missed is the “Future of Fashion” installation – showcasing a selection of fashion items from Stella McCartney’s two-decade collection. The installation showcases sustainable fashion pieces such as the Frayme Mylo™️ bag – the world’s first luxury bag made from mycelium.

A thought-provoking installation is “How much do your pieces weigh?”

“What if the world was engulfed by garbage?” was the question that onlookers were asked as they were invited to reflect on social practice as they walked under the rubbish dump.

In another installation, ‘Kin’ bricks made from restaurant discarded shellfish and natural low carbon lime are another exploration of alternative building material options, symbiotic with nature and inviting humans to rethink their relationship with the environment .

Visitors willing to try some design work will be delighted to learn that Dubai Design Week offers an intensive workshop programme. From growing edible mushrooms on used books to sustainable printing on textiles, documentary making, coding and embroidery, there is always a workshop for every creative preference.

FLTRD’s Design Marketplace is Dubai Design Week’s retail home experience. It features art vendors selling collectibles, accessories and objects with unique designs.
