The final race weekend of the 2022 season is underway with the first two free practice sessions taking place earlier today at Abu Dhabi.
We’ve rounded up what happened today and what you need to know ahead of the final practice session and tomorrow’s qualifying session.
FP1 sees some newcomers to the sport
A number of teams have used FP1 as an opportunity to bring some young drivers to the Yas Marina Circuit. McLaren put Indy Car driver Pato O’Ward in Lando Norris’ car. Unfortunately, the car had problems almost immediately and had to be driven back to the garage. We hear Alward on the radio:
“Uh, something happened in the car.”
McLaren instructed him to race that lap and worked on the car. They managed to work it out and Alwald managed to complete 22 laps in his F1 weekend debut.
Formula 2 driver Liam Lawson has replaced Max Verstappen in his Red Bull car despite nearly missing his pit lane after the first run , but when he got back on the track he managed to get the fifth fastest time and was just two-tenths of a time behind Sergio Perez.
Logan Sargent, who is expected to play for Williams next year if he earns enough points on his super license, is out in place of Nicolas Latifi in FP1. Sergeant had just moved up to third fastest before exiting turn one. Fortunately, he was able to stop the car from colliding with the barrier.
Mercedes continue their Brazilian GP performance
Mercedes improved significantly towards the end of the season and finished 1-2 at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton and George Russell were able to maintain this strong performance throughout FP1 and FP2.
Ferrari suffers performance problems
Charles Leclerc and Red Bull’s Sergio Perez will enter Sunday’s Grand Prix on the exact same points as they battle for second place in the championship. Leclerc was unhappy with the car’s performance in practice and we heard him ask the team why the car was so slow, saying “we’re not doing very well at the moment”.
