UAE: New organization engages, representing Filipino diaspora

[ad_1]

“Being a global Filipino, being a Filipino citizen living overseas means a responsibility. We have to represent our country proudly, as our ambassador said, the moment we present our passports become an “ambassador” for our country. This puts the onus on us to familiarize ourselves with the laws of the host country and to be a role model,” Casao said.

There are approximately 700,000 Filipino expats living and working in the UAE, and the new organization hopes to appeal to a large portion of the community. It will be run by 14 officials sworn to handle various interests.

Formed informally in 2020, the organization is a community group representing diverse interests.

“There are many Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) communities in the UAE, but many of them are dedicated to certain professions or interests. We want to attract people with different interests and professions,” Casao said.

While the group’s activities have so far been limited in anticipation of the formal oath, members have supported some Filipino expats in the community. Casao said the organization has raised at least Dh7,200 during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide essential items to expatriates who have lost their jobs or are in poor health.

“We will also continue to work with the Philippine embassy to support community initiatives, as we did in the recent celebration of the 48th anniversary of the Philippines-UAE relationship,” Casao added.
