Yungblud revealed his childhood was scarred by his parents’ “abusive” relationship.
The 25-year-old singer – whose real name is Dominic Harrison – grew up in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England, with dad Justin and mum Samantha and two younger sisters, but he says the couple’s explosive row and family guitar shop His troubles made him miserable.
“My parents had this weird, beautiful dark relationship, I don’t know if I see I’ve seen two people as much as them, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone hurt each other like they did.
“It was physical, mental and emotional abuse. I always wanted to build a world where I could exist to escape what was going on around me.”
His parents appeared on the show with their son, and Justin said of the fight with Samantha: “We did yell at each other, you know, way too much.
“I have anger issues and I still go to therapy every week. I’ve calmed down a lot over the past few years, but obviously I needed therapy to manage the anger outbursts and that’s what I did.”
Samantha added: “We were 16 when we first met. You liked each other’s pants. You didn’t necessarily respect each other. I’m not trying to prove it, but our neutrality can be disrespectful, young And the passion we need to shout, we need to do things our way.
“We went to counseling for several years, and I think we learned to respect each other.”
She went on to say she felt “guilty” after reading her son’s interview about his childhood, with the singer tearing up as he admitted the family hadn’t worked it out together.
He added: “It scares me. It’s tough. I just don’t think we’ve worked out a lot of things together.”
However, he insisted that he loves his family and said he too was able to channel his pain into his music, with Justin concluding: “I think our family is very close to speaking out about what we’ve been through.”
