Al Bayader forms alliance to strengthen circular economy in GCC

[ad_1]

Al Bayader International, a global manufacturer of sustainable food packaging, has announced a strategic partnership with a global leader in sustainability to accelerate and enhance the circular economy in the GCC.

Al Bayader has also launched innovative sustainable products to complement the UAE’s focus to promote a circular economy and lead the industry towards a more sustainable, resilient, agile and efficient future.

These new strategic moves were announced at Gulfood Manufacturing 2022’s Private Labeling and Licensing Middle East (PLLME) event.

digital infrastructure

As a regional leader in sustainable food packaging in the region, Al Bayader International has a particular focus on leveraging digital infrastructure to strengthen the country’s circular economy. This is supported by a signed partnership between the German company Reifenhäuser and the award-winning R-Cycle initiative.

The company-led R-Cycle initiative provides the infrastructure for a digital product passport containing all relevant data on product materials and preferred end-of-life options. All products will have a marker, such as a QR code or digital watermark, that can be scanned at waste disposal or at a recycling plant to place the product in the best end-of-life area. This ensures higher recycling efficiency and higher sorting quality. The developed infrastructure is based on GS1 standards.

Al Bayader International worked closely with R-Cycle to develop a pilot project in the GCC region, using their network throughout the supply chain and leveraging their strong printing capabilities on rigid plastics.

use R loop

The pilot project will include the use of R-Cycle to account for the use of recycled content in packaging. From then on, these projects will focus on using R-Cycle to promote proper segregation at source, contributing to more high-quality, low-polluting recycled plastics. The partnership will further enhance the circular economy in the UAE and the wider GCC.

Dr. Benedikt Brenken, Director of the R-Cycle Initiative, said: “This is a key step towards further internationalizing R-Cycle and making its debut in the GCC region. We are delighted to have found a strong and experienced partner in Al Bayader International, He has mastered the local business since 1991, while internationally employing over 1,000 people and growing steadily in other markets including Europe and Africa.”

Cooperation with Sulapac

Al Bayader International also announced a renewed partnership with Sulapac, a Finnish company pioneering sustainable materials in a variety of industries, including the food packaging industry. Al Bayader International and Sulapac have partnered to launch Gaïa, Al Bayader International’s sustainable tableware line.

Commitment to Net Zero Emissions by 2050

Nidal Haddad, Founder and CEO of Al Bayader International, underscored the importance of these initiatives, saying: “The circular economy concept is at the heart of the sustainability narrative, especially as countries around the world race to achieve the 2050 net-zero emissions target .in line with global decarbonization commitments.

“The food packaging industry plays a central role in driving a circular economy model, and as a regional pioneer, we are introducing R-Cycle to the region for the first time and launching new sustainable products for the food packaging industry developed using sustainable materials.

“These will be game-changing for the industry, supporting sustainable development underpinned by the recently announced UAE Circular Economy Policy. We are proud to enter into such a global partnership, further reaffirming our commitment to contribute to the UAE’s 2050 Net Zero Emissions Strategic Plan , and set an example for our stakeholders ahead of next year’s COP28 in the UAE.”

4-R Pathways to Recycling

Recently, Al Bayader International announced that it is implementing a 4-R circular path, focusing on “Redesign, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle”. This approach prevents plastic packaging from ending up in nature by improving reuse and recycling methods, and reduces the carbon footprint of packaging through eco-design to ensure circularity at every step. It also optimizes resource usage for energy efficiency.
