Emirates News Agency – Dawoodi Bohra community leaders support Abu Dhabi mangrove initiative

ABU DHABI, 9th December, 2022 (WAM) — During his ongoing visit to Abu Dhabi, Mufadar Saifuddin, leader of the Dawoodi Bohra community, made a gesture of seeing more than 10,000 new mangrove trees Showed his support for the Abu Dhabi Mangroves Initiative by planting saplings with the aim of increasing the total mangrove cover in the emirate.

The social benefit initiative is part of Project Rise, the global philanthropy of the Dawoodi Bohra community, and is aligned with Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi’s long-term strategic plan to restore mangrove areas using modern agricultural techniques.

Ahmed Alhashmi, Executive Director, Terrestrial and Marine Biodiversity Unit, Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD), said: “Abu Dhabi is eager to use nature-based solutions to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change, and the Abu Dhabi Dhabi Mangrove Initiative Part of the journey to strengthen this vision. We thank the Dawoodi Bohra community for their environmental action in supporting the National Mangrove Conservation and Carbon Sequestration Project.”

Murtaza Poonawala, project coordinator from Dawoodi Bohras, Abu Dhabi, said: “Protecting and enhancing mangrove cover plays a vital role in mitigating climate change. Among many other key functions, mangroves are exceptional in capturing and storing carbon. Effective. They also provide a natural habitat for a wide variety of wildlife.”

“The mangrove planting project will be carried out in two phases. In the first phase, 5,100 mangroves will be planted to mark the UAE’s 51st National Day, and in the second phase, additional 5,100 mangroves,” he added.

During COP26 in Glasgow, the UAE announced a mandate to plant 100 million mangroves across the country by 2030 to expand mangrove coverage and restore damaged areas within the emirate. Furthermore, in February this year, Abu Dhabi laid out ambitious plans to establish the emirate as a global research and innovation hub to support conservation efforts through the Abu Dhabi Mangrove Initiative. This was met during a landmark visit to the UAE by His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Member of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Office Announced by His Royal Highness Prince William, Duke of Cambridge. The initiative is an extension of the Blue Carbon Project, focusing on the importance of mangroves and their role in combating climate change through carbon sequestration.

The Dawoodi Bohra community has undertaken several ongoing initiatives, including community cleaning and waste management programs in the area, aimed at enhancing and improving the UAE’s climate.
