The car belonged to McCoy. She told law enforcement she was using the vehicle to make a DoorDash delivery when the shooting occurred. Investigators, however, found footage of McCoy making deliveries in another vehicle belonging to Duckworth at the time, before switching back to her own.

It was not immediately clear why Cross was shot. He has worked for USPS for 18 years. A former colleague said he had four children, and others remembered his positive attitude.

U.S. Attorney Gregory Hanstad said police worked with the FBI, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and other federal, state and local partners to bring charges.

“If you harm one of our employees, we will find you and put you in jail,” Kai Pickens, acting inspector with the USPS Inspection Service’s Chicago division, said in a statement.

Ducksworth’s attorney, Robert LeBell, said he would learn more about the case after prosecutors turned over evidence to him, but pledged to “defend Ducksworth as vigorously as possible to ensure that his innocence is protected.”

Attorneys for McCaa and McCoy did not immediately return messages. (Associated Press)
