Residents of the UAE welcomed a sharp drop in petrol prices in January 2023, with many calling it the “perfect New Year’s gift”. Prices published on Dec. 30 marked a drop of more than 50 fils for gasoline and 45 fils for diesel.

The price of Super 98 petrol dropped by 52 fils to Dh2.78 from Dh3.30. The price of Special 95 has been reduced from Dh3.18 to Dh2.67. The price of the E-Plus 91 dropped by 52 fils from Dh3.11 to Dh2.59. Diesel prices dropped 45 fils from Dh3.74 to Dh3.29.

Indian expatriate Arijit Nandi, who drives to Abu Dhabi every day, expressed his happiness. “It’s a great comfort and the perfect New Year’s gift, especially for those who drive between Dubai and Abu Dhabi every day,” he said. “It’s a welcome move.”

This is the cheapest petrol price since January 2022, when Super 98 petrol was Dh2.65, Special 95 petrol was Dh2.53 and E-plus petrol was Dh2.46.

Mohammed, a Dubai resident, said he was at a petrol station when the price was announced and saw several cars drive away when the notification came. There are similar scenes in other emirates.

“I had enough petrol for another 15km and I was queuing to fill up when I got the notification. Kaijie era Regarding petrol prices in January,” said Ateeq Ahmed at the Adnoc petrol station in Al Nahda, Sharjah.

“So I decided to just top up Dh50 worth of fuel.”

The UAE deregulated retail fuel prices in August 2015, and the council has announced revised prices every month since then. Prices were lowered in August, September and October after UAE retail fuel prices hit an all-time high in July 2022.
