Abu Dhabi’s Masdar City has announced that it has broken ground on The Link, a 30,000 sqm sustainable community featuring the region’s first net-zero energy co-living and working facility.
It will feature four low-carbon buildings with event spaces, as well as retail options, entertainment facilities and an outdoor plaza, and is expected to create more than 2,000 jobs in the UAE.
Leading UAE construction firm Dutco has been contracted as the main contractor, while EDGE has designed The Link.
A major sustainability project in the region, The Link will meet several advanced sustainability standards such as Leed Platinum, WELL Gold, 4 Pearl PBRS Estidama and LEED SmartPark Silver.
Backed by renewable energy, the project is expected to significantly reduce energy use.
The development will offer residential units of various sizes, as well as dedicated office and commercial spaces. Amenities for residents will include courtyards with play areas, wellness areas and more. The commercial space will offer retail options on the ground level.
The Link is part of Masdar City’s sustainable urban development plan to link shared working and living spaces with other community amenities, a senior official said.
Its acting chief executive, Ahmed Baghoum, said: “It will create a new community by connecting shared working and living spaces with other elements of a thriving community, including shopping, entertainment and leisure venues, and local transport. , to shape a new type of sustainable development community.”
“This is an important part of the ‘green printing’ of Masdar City’s sustainable urban development and a great way to mark this year’s Year of Sustainability as the UAE prepares to host COP 28,” he added.

“Dutco was chosen largely because of their high score in domestic value (ICV) certification, which represents the value they will add to the UAE’s economy,” he added.
Martin Baerschmidt, Managing Director of EDGE, said: “Our priority was to combine Masdar City’s renowned international sustainability principles with world-class living, working and leisure spaces to create a truly iconic architectural landmark and community experience. “
Baerschmidt explained that the 3,300-square-meter multi-purpose hall and visitor center will host conferences, exhibitions and live performances, and will house retail areas on the ground floor and restaurants on the first floor.
The flexible auditorium will seat 300 people and will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology and equipment, according to top designers.
The Link will connect all areas of Masdar City through the transportation network. He added it would create a transition route between the upcoming light rail transit and the group’s rapid transit network, and provide cycle lanes, bus links, charging ports, car-sharing facilities and parking for 1,255 vehicles.trade arab news agency
