ASO musicians play trio; Argenta, Rogers set for season

music: “Rhapsody” Trio

various trios of arkansas symphony musicians Performing JS Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, Zoltan Kodaly, Paul T. Chamber music repertoire with Lapkus and Stephanie Berg, 1200 President Clinton Avenue, Little Rock.

Jeffrey Robson, violin; Julian Pranata, viola da gamba; and Daniel Gilbert, harpsichord will perform Bach’s Violin Sonatas and Tontino BWV 1023. Katherine Williamson, violin; Timothy MacDuff, viola; and Jacob Wunsch, cello will perform Beethoven’s String Trio in D Major, Op. 9, No. 2. Meredith Maddox Hicks and Charlotte Crosmer, violins, MacDuff will perform Kodaly’s Serenade for Two Violins and Viola, Op. 12 .

Violinists Andrew Irvin, Leanne Day-Simpson and Algimantas Staskevicius will perform Trapkus’ trio of three violins. and Lorraine Dusso Kitts, oboe; Gail Lewinsky, saxophone; and pianist Jackie Edwards-Henry will perform Berger’s “Justice for All.”

March 11th is the deadline for applications for young instrumentalists Arkansas Symphony Association Statewide 2022-23 Stella Boyle Smith Trust Young Artist Competition For students of piano, strings, woodwinds and brass. Students must receive their initial audition – complete application and performance video – by March 25th.Find application and rules forms and more information on how to apply arkansassymphony.org/education/young-artist-competition. The Finals will be held on April 15 at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. The grand prize is $1,000; each eligible winner in each instrument category will receive $250.

Judy Kohn Tenenbaum Argenta Community Theater The 2023-24 season kicks off with an ACTing UP student summer camp production of “Disney’s High School Musical 2 Jr.” on the Main Stage at 405 Main Street in North Little Rock, June 28-30. The music was adapted, arranged, and produced by Bryan Louiselle; the book is written by David Simpatico, based on the Disney Channel TV movie.

The rest of the theater’s main stage schedule:

  • ◼️ July 26-August 5: Music, lyrics and book for Rent by Jonathan Larson, loosely based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera La Bohème People” adaptation.
  • ◼️ August 30-September 9: “Bring It On: The Musical,” composed by Tom Kitter and Lin-Manuel Miranda, lyrics by Amanda Green and Miranda, based on Jeff Whitty film adaptation.
  • ◼️ October 18-22: Spirit Trickey Tawfiq’s “One of Nine,” tells the story of the Little Rock Nine through the eyes of Tawfiq’s mother, Minnijean Brown Trickey.
  • ◼️ December 6-16: “Miracle on 34th Street,” Mountain Community Theater’s adaptation of the novel by Valentine Davis, based on the 1947 film of the same name.
  • ◼️ February 21-March 2, 2024: “Godspell,” music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, book by John Michael Tebelak, based on the Gospel of St. Matthew.

On stage in the theater’s secondary space, ACT II: Sharon Heflin Center for Performing Arts Education, 315 Main:

  • ◼️ September 13-23: “Doubt” by John Patrick Shanley, part of the Southern Akanza Festival.
  • ◼️ May 8-18, 2024: “The Lion in Winter” by James Goldman. (The first week show will be a theater with second week theater-style seating).

rogers season

Arkansas Public Theater Season 38 at the Victory Theater at 116 Second Street in Rogers is being scaled back as the theater will be closed for several months for a remodel to add seating and amenities as a multipurpose facility. It will include three musicals — dates may change depending on the pace of the revamp:

  • ◼️ February 16-18, 22-25, 2024: “Into the Woods,” music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, book by James Lapine.
  • ◼️ April 12-14, 18-21, 2024: “Rent” by Jonathan Larson, music, lyrics and book.
  • ◼️ June 21-23, 27-30, 2024: “Kinky Boots,” music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper, book by Harvey Fierstein.
