Emirates opens humanitarian air bridge to Turkey and Syria

Emirates and International Humanitarian Cities (IHC) have established an air bridge to deliver emergency relief supplies, medical supplies and equipment to support ground aid efforts and search and rescue operations in earthquake-affected Turkey and Syria.

The first consignment, EK 121 and EK 117, departed on Friday and included heat blankets and family tents from the UN refugee agency, followed by medical kits and shelter items from the World Health Organization (WHO) and World Food Program (WFP) The rescue cargo, co-co-ordinated by IHC in Dubai.

Over the next few days, Emirates will be delivering additional blankets, tents, shelter kits, flashlights, water distribution ramps, and trauma and first aid kits.

Emirates SkyCargo plans to dedicate cargo space for around 100 tonnes of humanitarian aid during its daily flight operations to Istanbul over the next two weeks. Vital emergency supplies carried by Emirates will then be flown by local organizations to affected areas in southern Turkey and northern Syria to support responders on the ground and provide much-needed assistance to the hundreds of thousands affected by the quake.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and CEO of Emirates Airline, said: “We stand with the people of Turkey and Syria, and in partnership with experts such as Humanitarian City International, Helping provide emergency relief to those affected and displaced by the earthquake, as well as supporting complex recovery efforts on the ground. Emirates has extensive experience in supporting humanitarian relief efforts, and through three daily flights to Istanbul, will provide relief items and medical supplies with regular and consistent wide-body capacity. Emirates also supports ongoing humanitarian relief efforts in the UAE in support of Turkey and Syria efforts, and Dubai’s unique position as the world’s largest logistics center for international aid means we are able to Reach affected areas and the most vulnerable populations as quickly and efficiently as possible.”

Mohammed Ibrahim Al Shaibani, Chairman of IHC’s Supreme Oversight Committee, said: “IHC remains committed to providing those affected by the earthquake with the humanitarian support and resources they need. We are taking urgent action to facilitate the airlift of vital supplies UNHCR, WHO (WHO) and the World Food Program (WFP) to provide medical supplies, shelter items and other relief supplies in response to the urgent need for assistance in the affected areas.”

Emirates’ Cargo division has a long-standing partnership with IHC that has enabled the airline to nimbly and quickly lead numerous relief missions, deploying humanitarian aid to communities around the world affected by natural disasters, medical emergencies, global pandemics and other crises doctrine material.

In 2020, the airline facilitated relief efforts in Lebanon following the Beirut port explosion. In 2021, Emirates launched a humanitarian air bridge between Dubai and India to deliver emergency medical and relief supplies to support the country’s efforts to contain the COVID-19 outbreak. Last year, the airline provided cargo capacity to organizations working with IHC to deliver critical equipment and supplies directly to five flood-damaged cities in Pakistan.

Over the years, Emirates has also partnered with the Airbus Foundation to support humanitarian flights, and since 2013, Emirates A380 ferry flights have delivered more than 120 tonnes of food and critical emergency equipment to those in need. – trade arab news agency
