dubai — Actor Idris Elba says he will reprise his role as tortured detective John Luther, not James Bond.

At the World Government Summit in Dubai on Tuesday, Elba raised ongoing discussions about his successor to Ian Fleming, the famed British spy. Those voices got louder after Daniel Craig took on the role of Bond in No Time to Die, the 25th film in the franchise.

Elba was apparently no longer in 007 when asked about his upcoming film adaptation of the British series Luther.

“It’s very dark,” Elba says of the collection. ”

He added: “You know, a lot of people talk about another character that starts with a ‘J’ and ends with a ‘B’, but I’m not going to be that guy. I’m going to be John Luther. That’s who I am.”

“Luther: Fall of the Sun” opens in theaters in the US on February 24, and then streams on Netflix starting March 10. Andy Serkis and the rest of the show’s cast will also co-star.

Elba, 50, is known for various TV and film roles, including Stringer Bell in the US TV series “The Wire” and most recently the film “The Beast”.

On stage, Elba discussed an upcoming movie he’s working on with American actor and wrestler John Cena called “Heads of State.”

“He played the president of the United States. I played the prime minister of the United Kingdom,” Elba said. “We started bickering. I’m really excited about doing this because leadership comes in so many different forms.”

In recent weeks, Elba has appeared at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where he and his wife Sabrina Dhowre Elba have been awarded for their work on food security in Africa. Elba, who also worked as an anti-crime ambassador in the UK for the Don’t Hurt Your Future initiative, grew up in east London.

In his speech, Elba urged countries to increase investment in creative industries, saying that creative industries can become economic engines and provide employment opportunities for young people. In particular, he noted that creative work can greatly help African countries.

“I believe Africa, especially as a continent, needs to maintain a narrative and change a narrative,” he said.

Speaking of storytelling, Elba also praised the “incredible tourism stories” that Dubai has developed over the past few decades. The city-state is experiencing a new real estate boom, In Moscow’s war on Ukraine, partly because of Russian cash.

“I think Dubai deserves an Oscar because this (place) is amazing,” Elba said to applause. “This is very, very good work that other countries should take note of.”
