Daheri confident of UAE’s performance at Asian Jiu-Jitsu Championships

Ahead of the championship match, Gulf Today interviewed Mohamed Salem Al Dhaheri, vice-president of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation.

Excerpt from interview.

Q. How likely is it that the UAE Jiu-Jitsu team will defend their title in the Asian Championships? What practice did the team do before the game?

A: The UAE National Jiu-Jitsu Team has been on a roll lately, and as our players prepare for this week’s Asian Championships in Bangkok, Thailand, their performance is one of the best. We have every confidence that the national team will build on last year’s outstanding achievements, which saw them win the Asian Championships in Manama, Bahrain, the Jiu-Jitsu World Championships in Abu Dhabi, and the World Games in 2018. medals. The team has been preparing for the game. They are equipped with the best coaches and technical teams. The Emirates Jiu-Jitsu Federation has gone to great lengths to ensure teams have access to the best resources and top-notch training they need to perform so effectively. A few weeks before the Asian Championships, the team conducted a training camp in the UAE. They were then sent to a training camp in Sydney, where they underwent intensive training. It puts a lot of emphasis on improving their technical; skills while preparing them physically and mentally for international competition.

Q. Can you introduce in detail how the national team performed in previous Asian Championships?

A. The UAE team is the defending champion of the Asian Championships. Last year, the team successfully defended their Intercontinental Championship in Bahrain, winning an incredible 16 medals. They also set a record by becoming the first nation in the competition’s history to win eight gold medals, which is more than half of the total offered. At the 5th Asian Jiu-Jitsu Championships held in Abu Dhabi in 2021, the team also shined brilliantly, ranking first in the medal table with 4 golds, 4 silvers, 10 bronzes and 18 medals.

Q: Can you briefly describe some of your efforts to bring the sport to the grass roots of UAE society?

A. It is the goal of UAEJJF to integrate jiu jitsu into grassroots society in the UAE. If you can check our calendar, we have four Challenge Jiu-Jitsu events scheduled for the new season. Challenges are specially curated competitions where boys and girls ages 5 to 17 compete in various belt levels. These competitions have generated a lot of interest from parents and families who have signed up their children for these events. The fact that the family is passionate about the sport is proof that the efforts of the UAEJJF are paying off.

Q. Apart from the Asian Championships, which international competitions are you most looking forward to this year?

A: The UAE national team have a convincing international schedule for the new season which has helped them maintain their success thus far. After the Asian Championships, the team will participate in the Jiu-Jitsu Grand Prix held in France in April and the Open Jiu-Jitsu Grand Prix held in Thailand in May. World Adult and Disabled Jiu-Jitsu Championships in Mongolia in July, World Youth Championships in Kazakhstan in August, World Wushu Games in Saudi Arabia in October, Asian Indoor and Wushu Games in Thailand in November, World Jiu-Jitsu The Jiu-Jitsu Beach Cup in Thailand in September and the Asian Games in China in October are also on the team’s radar.
