While the West has come closer together in the first year of the Ukraine war, they have grown further apart from the rest of the world. A new study by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), Europe’s leading think tank, reveals just that. The study was released ahead of the one-year anniversary of the war in Ukraine.

For their study, ECFR researchers surveyed people in nine European Union (EU) member states, as well as the US, UK, India, China, Russia and Turkey. This reveals a huge gap between the general opinion of the people of the European Union and that of the rest of the world on matters of war, democracy and the balance of power in the world. EU member states surveyed include France, Germany and Poland.

The researchers involved in the investigation concluded that the Ukraine war could be a major turning point in world history. After this, a “world free from Western influence” can now emerge. Mark Leonard, director of the ECFR and one of the study’s authors, told the Guardian – “The war in Ukraine revealed a paradox. The West is now more united, but its influence in the world is greater than ever Small any time.

Professor Timothy Garton-Ash of the University of Oxford, UK, who participated in the study, described the results of the study as throwing cold water on Western enthusiasm. He said – the war in Ukraine created unity between Europe and the United States and gave them a common purpose. But Western countries have completely failed to bring China, India, Turkey and other world powers over. He said – “The lesson is clear. We must immediately prepare such a new narrative, which can be accepted in the world’s largest democracy, India, and countries like it.

During the survey, respondents were given ten words to describe Russia’s behaviour. In the U.S., 45 percent chose the word “aggressive,” while 41 percent chose the word “untrustworthy.” In Europe, these words were chosen by 48% and 30%, respectively, while in the UK, the figures were 57% and 49%. But in non-Western countries, the numbers are still much smaller.

Instead, majorities in these countries believe that the dominance of the United States and its partners will end in the next decade. An expert involved in the study told the Guardian that most people in the world now believe that the world is divided into two poles. People outside of western countries see things differently now.

He said – “Western countries must now learn to live with hostile countries with authoritarian systems, such as China and Russia. At the same time, they will have to learn to live with independent countries such as India and Turkey. These countries do not form any third group , and there is no common ideology. But they are not prepared to comply with the wishes and plans of major powers.
