Saudis, UAE lead GCC shift to renewables, boost climate commitments

In all countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Saudi Arabia The United Arab Emirates and United Arab Emirates are working to become greener, according to a report by an analyst firm, which says the countries’ efforts to invest in renewable energy projects will help them meet their climate goals.

About 90% of the Gulf Cooperation Council’s renewable energy capacity will come from the UAE and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by the end of 2021, according to a report by S&P Global Ratings released on Tuesday.

Saudi Arabia aims to get around 50% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030 as part of the plan Saudi Green Initiative, And the UAE raised its target to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 31% by 2030 by 2022.

To achieve these goals, countries have launched a series of initiatives. Saudi Arabia announced in 2022 plans to develop one of the world’s largest carbon capture, use and storage (CCUS) centers, aiming to capture 44 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent.

Saudi Arabia’s first wind farm, Dumat al-Jandal, is the largest operating wind asset in the region and is expected to displace nearly one million tons of carbon dioxide per year, according to the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) website.

Solar Strength

According to the International Renewable Energy Agency, by 2021, 90% of the GCC’s installed renewable energy capacity will come from solar power facilities.

The Al Dhafra power plant in Abu Dhabi is expected to be fully operational in 2023 and will be one of the largest single solar power plants in the world.
