Nominations for this year’s Australian Women in Music Awards open today (International Women’s Day, 8 March), providing a platform to highlight the changes and achievements women are making in the Australian music industry.

This year’s AWMA included the introduction of a new category — the inaugural Women in Heavy Music category — honoring “as an artist, musician, music practitioner, manager, artist or record label manager, supporter, and/or advocate for heavy music.” Nominations open for 18 categories here.

Nominations Now Open for Nearly 20 Categories

Other categories at the AWMA include the Lifetime Achievement Award (awarded to Deborah Cheetham last year), Music Diversity Award, Creative Leadership Award, Songwriter Award, Emerging Artist Award, Music Photographer Award, Music Journalist Award and Excellence in Styling and Makeup.

“AWMA has become a powerful industry leader, connecting people and communities and breaking down systemic issues that have held women back for decades,” executive producer and program director Vicki Gordon said in a statement.

“Through the AWMA, we have effectively raised our collective voice to demand fair opportunity, safety and recognition for women in the Australian music industry. This is reflected in the 936 women nominated, 136 finalists since our inaugural event in 2018 and 50 recipients of extraordinary achievements.

“This year, we are delighted to announce the inaugural Women in Heavy Music category created in direct consultation with the industry to reflect the depth and breadth of women’s influence on music in this country,” she continued.

“Powerful female figures, entertainers, ticket brokers, and record label executives are putting their stamp on a historically male-dominated genre. Women have been the driving force behind heavy music in many subgenres, from folk to black metal.” and we look forward to illuminating their extraordinary contributions.”

Nominations for this year’s AWMA close next month on Wednesday, April 26th. The awards ceremony, concert and conference will be held in Meanjin/Brisbane on Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th September, the full conference program will be announced shortly.

“I’m delighted that my home state of Queensland has once again shown its true strength and passion for leadership on Australian women and the arts,” said AWMA alumnus Katie Noonan said in a statement.

“For the 4th time in her history, the AWMA will be held in Meanjin/Brisbane and will once again showcase some of the most deserving and hard-working women in Australian music on and off stage.”
