Tesla vehicles will join Ajman’s fleet of publicly owned taxis as the city seeks to reduce carbon emissions. The Ajman Public Transport Authority (APTA) will also build a bus terminal with 24 solar-powered bus parking lots by the end of the year.

At a press conference on Tuesday, APTA Public Transport and Licensing Agency Executive Director Engineer Sami Al Jallaf said authorities were working to strengthen sustainability initiatives in the public transport sector.

Since 2016, the authority has allocated AED 15 million to support the sustainability projects of companies operating in the emirate’s taxi sector, with the aim of strengthening transport sustainability projects. “The initiative is part of the vision of the emirate to adopt a strategic plan to establish a concept of sustainable development,” he added.

Sheikh Saeed bin Majid Al Qasimi, executive director of Arabian Taxi Company, said the launch of the new Tesla taxis is in line with the vision of the country’s wise leadership to enhance sustainability.

Al Jallaf noted that APTA’s work is aimed at converting all taxi fleets to eco-friendly vehicles, as the proportion of eco-friendly vehicles reached 81% of the total taxi fleet this year.

Al Jallaf reviewed the authorities’ efforts and contributions to sustainable development and its application in the emirate’s transport system, reducing carbon emissions that harm the atmosphere and the ozone layer due to the combustion of fuel in vehicles.

He noted that the authorities have adopted a sustainability plan for transport system services, especially the taxi fleet.

Al Jallaf said APTA aims to use all types of clean alternative fuel energy in its taxi fleet, as the agency offers several types of vehicles for environmentally friendly operations, including those that run on natural gas, hybrids, as well as electric and hydrogen vehicles.

He highlighted APTA’s passion to improve quality of life and reduce carbon emissions by encouraging public transport and making it available to all members of society and encouraging their use.

“Providing safe and sustainable transport helps reduce road congestion,” he added
