KATHMANDU, March 20 (PTI) — Senior Madheshi leader Ramsahaya Prasad Yadav was sworn in as Nepal’s third vice president on Monday, days after he handily defeated the candidate sent by CPN-UML.

Nepal’s President Ram Chandra Poudel officiated at the swearing-in and secrecy of 52-year-old Yadav in a special ceremony at the President’s Office Sheetal Niwas.

Candidate Yadav from the Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) defeated his closest rival, Ashta Laxmi Shakya from the Communist Party of Nepal (United Marxist-Leninist) [CPN-UML] Led by former prime minister KP Sharma Oli, it narrowly leads elections for the post on March 17.

He became the Himalayan nation’s third vice president and the first from the Madsis region bordering India.

Yadav, dressed in Nepalese national costume, took the oath in Nepali language at the swearing-in ceremony.

The event was attended by Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, House Speaker Devraj Ghimire, former prime ministers, ministers and MPs.

In the vice-presidential vote held last week, Yadav had the support of the Nepal Congress, CPN-Maoist Centre, CPN-United Socialist Party and other fringe parties.

Last week’s vice-presidential election was the third since the country adopted the Federal Democratic Republic system in 2008.

Yadav’s election to the post further boosts the coalition government headed by Prime Minister ‘Prachanda’, as the CPN-UML, led by former prime minister Oli, withdrew its support to his government following a rift over backing Poudel for the presidential poll.

Poudel of the Nepali Congress was elected as the new president of Nepal on March 9.

Like the President, the Vice-President is elected by an electoral college composed of members of the Federal Parliament (House of Representatives and National Assembly) and Provincial Assemblies.

The Vice President serves a five-year term.

Madhesi leader Yadav will succeed the current Nanda Bahadur Pun after his term ends.

The Madhesi community in the Terai region of southern Nepal is predominantly of Indian origin.

Vice President Yadav is a permanent resident of Sinlanga City in Bala County in southern Nepal.

He has been active in the Madhesi movement for Madhesi rights and representation.

Yadav started his political journey in 1990 with the Sadbhawana Party of Nepal.

He was the founding secretary-general of the Madhesi Jana Adhikar Forum and played an active role in the first Madhesh movement (2007).

Yadav was elected to the House of Representatives from Bara-2 in the polls held in November last year. PTI SBP AKJ
