Column: Entertainment ‘news’ needs less celebrity coverage

[ad_1]

The public’s obsession with the details of celebrities’ lives has a long history. We’re dying to find out who Pete Davidson is dating, how much Jimmy Fallon’s house is worth, and how exactly Demi Lovato is coping with their drug addiction.

Various mainstream organizations have been guilty of spreading the obsession, even excluding malicious tabloids masquerading as legitimate news sources such as national enquirer and sun. Stories flooded the front pages and social media, treated like breaking news.

Access Hollywood recently released a series of photo Avril Lavigne with her rumored new boyfriend Tyga. BuzzFeed News currently has a article Titled “Justin Bieber’s reaction to Hailey Bieber being bullied is so petty…” I recently took an early-morning Uber and listened to the radio host’s reaction to Tiger Woods and his ex- Rika Hermann’s rant, 10 full minutes. Are these really need-to-know headlines?

News organizations cannot deny their power. Their journalistic expertise thinks and validates the stories we consume. But our attention is often diverted from more pressing issues. It’s easy to see why people prefer to follow Us Weekly timeline Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green’s Relationship Is Better Than President Joe Biden’s new budgetbut this should not be exploited.

Most entertainment news is relatively unimportant. But even in entertainment news, there are better stories. For example, it’s important to know when Ye (better known as Kanye West) antisemitic remarks On Twitter or as Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis To raise funds Humanitarian aid efforts in Ukraine. Reporting more irrelevant stories would distract us.

Remember one of the “biggest” stories from last year? Released in 2022, Don’t Worry, Honey, is a psychological thriller starring well-known actors including Florence Pugh and Harry Styles. In the days leading up to the movie’s premiere, there was a lot of drama surrounding the cast and entertainment news outlets.from rumored relationship Between Styles and director Olivia Wilde, obvious discord Press conference between Pugh and Wilde and Styles allegedly spit There’s always another irrelevant controversy about Chris Pine.

We focus more on the merits of the drama than the film. For example, the film has a rare female director at the helm, Pugh gives an incredible performance, and the story tackles important themes. But these stories rarely, if ever, become popular topics.

Could some of these entertainment news organizations even be considered news organizations? News organizations report relevant stories. But most celebrity news doesn’t change our daily lives. Our lives won’t be affected by Austin Kevitch relation with Camila Cabello, Blake Lively to wear walk or whether kendall jenner kissed bad bunny. Therefore, I hesitate to consider these as news reports.

At the 2023 Grammys earlier this year, it was hard to find a full coverage of the night, just a celebration of the music’s fun and the night’s winners. However, there are many stories about Adele allegedly Out came after Styles won Album of the Year and several articles compiled social media reactions to Beyoncé’s loss of the same award.

Everyone can have their own opinion about what happened. Still, it saddens me to see the aftermath of over-reporting and social media spiraling.I distinctly remember opening Twitter and seeing the Grammy’s drama trending above earthquake The initial 3,700 people were killed in Turkey on the same day. Is that what we choose to focus on? Really?

Of course, social media made things worse. Not only do news organizations overpush their stories across multiple channels, but additional exposure to irrelevant stories can lead to strong negative reactions.Just look at any comments under account posts, eg BuzzFeed Celebrities or entertainment tonight.

Worse, social media outrage sometimes causes it to disappear from the internet.

Recently, there has been some suspected drama between Justin Bieber, Hailey Bieber, and Selena Gomez.I don’t fully understand the details, but luckily Forbes made a run down This incredibly relevant story.Justin Bieber then performed at the Rolling Loud festival in Los Angeles, and fans started screaming insult against his wife.

Unfortunately, I know this is common fan behavior, and it’s definitely not the first time a fan has publicly targeted a celebrity with no regard for their mental health or privacy. Many of us have stopped treating famous people like people who deserve respect. But I bet the public reaction might have been tempered if the media hadn’t confirmed the story and made it a scandal. You’re less likely to be angry about something you didn’t know in the first place, which is why the media ecosystem is still guilty.

The mitigation of entertainment news coverage is a delicate topic that certainly cannot be dissected by a college student’s 900-word opinion piece. There are several arguments that I barely touch on, such as how disrespectful reporting is, how some celebrities themselves instigate news coverage, or how the public bears the responsibility of avoiding consuming celebrity news. But the influence of news organizations on their reporting choices cannot be ignored.
