Kolkata (West Bengal) [India]March 26 (ANI): Bangladesh Deputy High Commissioner Andalib Elias said on Saturday that Bangladesh has been asking the United Nations to declare March 25 as World Genocide Day.

“Since 2017, we have considered this day as Genocide Day in Bangladesh. We have been seeking two things from the UN, declaring this day as World Genocide Day and acknowledging what happened in Bangladesh in 1971 It’s genocide,” Elias said.

On December 16, 1971, the Pakistani army surrendered to the combined Indian-Bangladesh forces, officially making Bangladesh the new state under the leadership of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

“On this day (March 25) in 1971, the Pakistani army attacked unarmed people in the middle of the night, killing thousands, and over the next nine months, they killed nine million in Bangladesh .It was one of the most brutal genocides ever,” said the Deputy High Commissioner of Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, the Swiss chapter of the International Secular Forum for Bangladesh (IFSB) held a demonstration on Saturday in the Broken Chairs Square in front of the UN building in Geneva, demanding recognition of the Bangladeshi genocide committed by the Pakistani army in 1971.

A total of 25 Bangladeshi expats from Europe gathered in front of the UN office to seek justice for Pakistan’s 1971 genocide and international recognition.

Bangladesh has been celebrating “Genocide Day” since 2017 to commemorate the atrocities committed by the Pakistani army against civilians on the night of March 25, 1971, when Pakistani troops launched “Operation Searchlight” in Dhaka to suppress ethnic Bengali ism movement.

All Bangladeshi European freedom fighters Sansad, members of the Swiss People’s Union and leaders of other international NGOs also participated in the protest.

Bangladeshi freedom fighter Tazul Islam from Zurich urged the UN Human Rights Council to recognize March 25 as “Bangladesh Genocide Day”.

Khalilur Rahman, chairman of the Swiss chapter of the IFSB, said the BNP and Jamat were terrorists in Bangladesh.

Aminul Rahman Khusru, another Bangladeshi freedom fighter from Frankfurt, also condemned the Pakistani army for genocide.

Mohsin Rahman Suman, Sahal Alam Agor, Suman Chakma and Mohammad Mojammel, all active members of the Swiss People’s Union have raised their slogans against BNP/Jamat and called them collaborators in the Bengal genocide, with the Pakistani army in torture, Sexual abuse, and mass killings in the 1971 war.
