Tunisia [Tunisia]March 27 (ANI): At least 28 migrants have died after their boat sank off the coast of Tunisia while trying to cross the Mediterranean to Italy, CNN reported, citing Italian officials.

In one shipwreck, at least 20 migrants were killed and more than 60 missing. The Italian coast guard said it had coordinated the rescue of 3,300 people from 58 ships in distress in the past 48 hours, CNN reported Sunday, citing a statement.

Most rescues took place on ships traveling from Tunisia to Lampedusa, Italy’s closest island to Africa. The latest disaster comes as authorities in Tunisia arrest undocumented sub-Saharan Africans.

A Tunisian fishing boat took 19 women and nine minors to the island of Lampedusa after rescuing them at sea Saturday, CNN reported. The Tunisian fishing boat is under investigation for abetting illegal immigration. According to a new decree, on the Italian side, rescuers must go to ports designated by the Italian Central Command and not conduct multiple rescues.

Tunisia has replaced Libya as the main departure point for people fleeing poverty and conflict in Africa and the Middle East. While all of the tourists arriving on Lampedusa over the weekend came by boat from Tunisia, Italy’s Interior Ministry said most of the arrivals were from sub-Saharan Africa, according to CNN.

At least 12,000 migrants have arrived in Italy this year from Tunisia, according to the United Nations, compared with 1,300 during the same period in 2022, according to news reports.

The Tunisian coast guard stopped more than 14,000 migrants departing by boat in the first three months of this year, compared with 2,900 during the same period in 2022, according to statistics from the Tunisian Forum for Social and Economic Rights. (ANI)
