Local News: Sikeston Jaycees Announce Bootheel Rodeo Entertainment Lineup (3/28/23)

SEXTON — The entertainment lineup for the 71st annual Sexton Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo was revealed Friday during the Jaycees’ first public Rodeo kickoff at rodeo sponsor Barn.

This year’s 2023 Sikeston Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo will feature Riley Green on Aug. 9; Travis Denning on Aug. 10; Ja Rule, The Yin and Yang Twins on Aug. 11; and Whiskey Miles on Aug. 12.

“Riley Green is a rising country star,” said Rodeo President Ethan Vasquez. “We believe Green will shine at the Sexton Rodeo. We can’t wait for him to take the stage.”

Green was nominated for Best New Country Artist at the iHeartRadio Music Awards, and he was also named one of the Breakthrough Artists of the Year at the Country Radio Symposium’s 2020 Fresh Faces and MusicRow’s Country Breakthrough Awards.

Green was born in Jacksonville, Alabama, and grew up listening to classic country music, bluegrass and Southern gospel. He spent time with his grandfather, Bufford Green, who managed the Golden Saw Music Hall, and learned how to write songs and perform from an early age. In 2019, BMLG Records released his debut full-length album, “Different Round Here,” which includes the gold-certified track “I Hope Grandpa Never Dies.”

Denning, a recording artist for Mercury Nashville and a native of Warner Robins, Georgia, will perform Thursday nights.

“We are very excited to have Travis Denning at this year’s rodeo,” Vasquez said.

Recording artist Denning recently released “ABBY” in 2020, with more than 17 million plays, the song topped Sirius XM’s Highway Hot 30, and the song was praised by critics as “smart kisses” and “Very funny” farewell national anthem. ’ The song also received the most country radio commercials at the time of its ad release.

Denning was inspired at an early age, falling in love with country, pop, rock and heavy metal, and started performing at local bars at the age of 16. Denning has gained a large fan base due to his unique tunes. He then moved to Nashville and acquired outside cuts from Jason Aldin, Justin Moore, Michael Ray and other artists.

On Thursday, Sexton Community Night will also be held to honor local businesses and community members who continue to support the rodeo.

According to Vasquez, this year’s rodeo will again include hip-hop flair. The Ying Yang twins and Ja Rule will entertain audiences on Friday night.

“Whistle While You Twurk,” a hit on urban and crossover radio, was the hit of Atlanta-based party rap duo Ying Yang Twins. Later in 2000, their first full-length album was released, titled Thug Walking.

Ja Rule, the stage name of Jeffrey Atkins, is signed to Murdeer Inc. (formerly The INC) and run by Irv Gotti. Between 1999 and 2005, several of Ja Rule’s singles reached the top 20 on the US Billboard Hot 100, including “Between Me and You” (with Christina Milian), “I’m Real (Murder Remix)” and “Ain’t It Funny” (with Jennifer Lopez).

Saturday is Mental Health Awareness Night and Whiskey Myers will wrap up the night.

Since their debut in 2007, multi-genre band Whiskey Myers have performed more than 3,000 live performances to growing audiences. Their recently released self-made fifth studio album Whiskey Myers reached number one on the country, US and folk sales charts, number two on the rock chart and number six on the Billboard 200 All Genres chart. There are segments (and cameos) in the wildly popular “Yellowstone” series on the Paramount Network, and their unique voices also lead to synchronous success.

“We’re ready to bring Whiskey Myers to life Saturday night,” Vasquez said.

Noah Curtis, chairman of the Sikeston Jaycees, said they always wanted to involve the community. The public can attend this year’s rodeo lineup launch with pre-sale tickets.

“To me, this is a long-awaited vision; we always want to involve our community,” Curtis said. “Bringing more people to this event, I know it has warmed the hearts of many of us and hopefully it will continue to engage our community and really make them proud of what we do here.”

Tickets range from $25 to $125 on Wednesday and Thursday nights, and $30 to $130 on Friday and Saturday nights. They can be purchased online at SikestonRodeo.com, by calling 800-455-BULL, or in person at a Rodeo Box Office.
